Malang Sarr: Former Chelsea and Lens defender linked with shock move to Saudi Pro League side NEOM SC

France-Senegal defender Malang Sarr, currently without a club after leaving RC Lens, is being linked with a move to Saudi Pro League outfit NEOM SC.

The 27-year-old centre-back became a free agent on 1 July 2026 following his departure from Lens, placing him in a position to negotiate directly with interested clubs. NEOM SC are understood to be exploring defensive reinforcements and view Sarr as an experienced option who can be signed without a transfer fee.

Sarr, a left-footed central defender born in Nice, joined Lens from Chelsea in the summer of 2024 and went on to help the northern club to French Cup success in the 2025-26 season. His spell in Ligue 1 was the most substantial phase of his career, with 169 appearances in the division and nearly 13,000 minutes of top-flight football.

His experience also includes eight outings in both the Premier League and the UEFA Champions League from his time on Chelsea’s books, as well as Europa League and domestic cup appearances across France and Portugal. Earlier in his career, he was part of the Chelsea squad that lifted the FIFA Club World Cup in 2022.

With his market value most recently listed at €20m but no transfer fee required, Sarr represents a potentially high-value addition for NEOM SC as they look to strengthen for the new Saudi Pro League campaign. For now, the defender remains unattached and is assessing his options ahead of the new season.
