Injury rules Ligue 1 star Ilan Kebbal out as Algeria turn to Ghedjemis

Algeria will be without midfielder Ilan Kebbal for the March international break after injury ruled him out of the squad, creating an opportunity for a new face to emerge as the national team begins preparations for the 2026 World Cup.

The omission of Kebbal initially raised questions, particularly given his involvement at club level and the timing of the camp, which marks the first phase of Algeria’s build-up to the next global tournament.

However, further information has clarified that the decision is injury-related rather than tactical.

The 27-year-old has been struggling with a quadriceps problem, which has prevented him from returning to full fitness in time for international duty.

The injury had already kept him out of recent matches for his club, including fixtures against Paris FC in Strasbourg and Le Havre.

As a result, he will also miss Algeria’s training camp in Italy, which begins this week.

Kebbal has been an important figure for Paris FC this season, making 23 appearances while contributing eight goals and four assists.

His performances have underlined his growing influence at club level and his importance to Algeria’s midfield options.

Despite this, caution appears to be guiding decisions around his recovery. Paris FC are reportedly unwilling to risk aggravating the injury, particularly following a previous situation involving Samir Chergui.

The club had expressed dissatisfaction with how the player’s condition was managed during the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, where his injury worsened.

That experience has contributed to a more careful approach in Kebbal’s case.

His absence has opened the door for Farès Ghedjemis, who now finds himself with a significant opportunity to stake a claim in the national team.

The winger, currently playing for Frosinone Calcio, has impressed in Italy’s Serie B this season and has been brought into the Algeria setup as part of the squad’s evolution.

For Ghedjemis, this call-up represents more than just temporary cover.

With Algeria looking to build depth and competition within the squad ahead of the 2026 World Cup, strong performances during this period could help him secure a more permanent role.

There is also the possibility of tactical adjustments within the team after the tournament, which could further increase his chances of establishing himself.

Kebbal, who has previously featured for Algeria, including an appearance at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, will now focus on recovery with the aim of returning to full fitness.
