Egypt national football team are edging closer to an unwanted record after a 1-1 draw with Belgium national football team in their opening Group G match of the 2026 World Cup, held in Mexico, Canada and the United States.
The match, played at Seattle Stadium in front of around 67,000 spectators on Monday, saw Egypt take the lead through Emam Ashour in the 19th minute. However, Belgium responded in the second half when Mohamed Hany inadvertently turned the ball into his own net in the 66th minute, ensuring the points were shared.
While the draw gave Egypt a first point of the tournament, it also extended a long-standing winless run in World Cup history that now stretches across multiple editions and decades.
No World Cup victory in Egypt’s history
Despite four appearances at the tournament — in 1930, 1990, 2018 and 2026 — Egypt are still yet to record a single World Cup victory. The draw against Belgium means that record remains unchanged, with the team still searching for their first ever win on football’s biggest stage.
The result also highlights a broader statistical concern. According to Stats Foot, Egypt now have eight World Cup matches without a win, placing them second on the all-time list for the most winless matches in the competition’s history. Only Honduras, with nine, have recorded more.
This places Egypt within touching distance of an unwanted milestone that could be matched or surpassed depending on their upcoming results in the tournament.
First point in decades highlights long struggle
The draw in Seattle carried some historical significance, as it marked Egypt’s first point in a World Cup match in 36 years.
Their last such achievement came in 1990, when they held Ireland to a 0-0 draw during the group stage in Italy. Since then, Egypt have endured a difficult run of results on the global stage.
At the 2018 World Cup, Egypt lost all three of their group matches — falling 1-0 to Uruguay, 3-1 to Russia and 2-1 to Saudi Arabia — and exited the tournament without a point.
The latest result against Belgium therefore ended a 36-year wait to register any form of points at the finals, even if it did not deliver the victory the team continues to chase.
Pressure builds ahead of New Zealand clash
Attention now turns to Egypt’s next group fixture against New Zealand national football team, a match that could prove decisive in shaping their tournament campaign.
Coach Hossam Hassan’s side are under increasing pressure to secure a win not only to revive their qualification hopes but also to avoid equalling Honduras’ record for the most winless matches in World Cup history.
A victory would also carry symbolic importance, as Egypt continue their search for a first-ever World Cup triumph — a milestone that has eluded them since their debut in 1934.
Eight-match winless sequence at World Cup finals
Egypt’s World Cup record now reads as follows:
- 2-4 loss to Hungary (1934)
- 1-1 draw with Netherlands (1990)
- 1-1 draw with Ireland (1990)
- 0-1 loss to England (1990)
- 0-1 loss to Uruguay (2018)
- 1-3 loss to Russia (2018)
- 1-2 loss to Saudi Arabia (2018)
- 1-1 draw with Belgium (2026)
With history increasingly in focus, Egypt’s upcoming match against New Zealand now carries added weight, as the team seeks to end a 92-year wait for a World Cup victory and avoid further unwanted records in the tournament’s history books.
