Al-Ahly delay explained as Wael Gomaa nears key role

Egyptian giants Al Ahly SC are expected to officially announce a wide-ranging restructuring of their football sector before the end of the week, following a series of internal meetings aimed at finalising the club’s new administrative framework.

An official source at the Cairo-based club said discussions had intensified in recent weeks between Yassin Mansour and Sayed Abdel-Hafiz as preparations continued for changes across multiple football departments.

The source said the announcement had been delayed largely because several senior figures, including club president Mahmoud Al-Khatib, had been outside the country, preventing the board of directors from meeting to formally approve the restructuring plans.

“He added: “There are reasons behind the delay in announcing the structure of the football sector, the first of which is the absence of Mahmoud Al-Khatib, the president of Al-Ahly, and more than one member of the board of directors, who were outside the country in the past period, which hindered holding a meeting of the board of directors to approve the structure of the sector.””

According to the source, some aspects of the restructuring are still being completed, particularly regarding the leadership of the youth sector ahead of next season.

“He explained: “Also, Mr. Abdel-Hafiz has not yet finalized some details regarding the structure of the football sector, which is nearing completion, especially concerning who will manage the youth sector next season.””

Despite the delay in the formal announcement, several appointments have already been made within the club’s football operations.

The source confirmed that Essam Siraj El-Din has assumed the role of director of contracts, while Tunisian coach Anis Boujelbane has taken charge of scouting operations.

Additional appointments include Hisham Hanafi as director of the Delphi team and Samer Abdel Rahman as technical director of the same side.

The source also confirmed that former African football official Abdel Moneim Shatta will oversee the club’s academies.

Within the women’s football division, Shadi Mohamed is set to remain in his current position, while Ahmed Ramadan will continue as technical director of the women’s first team.

Attention has also turned to the future leadership of the senior men’s side, with former captain Wael Gomaa emerging as the leading candidate to become football director.

The source stated that discussions had already taken place with Gomaa regarding the position, which is expected to become vacant following the departure of Walid Salah El-Din.

“He added: “The position of football director was offered to Wael Gomaa more than once before, but he refused. This time he asked for an opportunity to settle his situation in his work in the Qatari capital, Doha, and he is very close to officially taking over the position.””

The report also indicated that vice-president Yassin Mansour is attempting to reach an amicable agreement with current technical director Dane Jess Torup regarding the termination of his contract.

The expected overhaul is seen as part of a broader effort by Al-Ahly to reorganise their football structure ahead of the new season, with the club aiming to strengthen administration, scouting, youth development and technical operations across all levels.
