Al Ahly prioritise Van Bommel as coaching talks continue, Cardoso remains backup option

Al Ahly have reportedly made former Netherlands international and coach Mark van Bommel their leading candidate for the club’s vacant head coach position, with negotiations currently underway between both parties.

The Egyptian giants are said to be keen on appointing a high-profile manager as they prepare for a new chapter, but discussions remain focused on financial terms. Reports indicate Van Bommel is seeking a package worth approximately $4.5 million, with talks expected to continue until Tuesday as both sides attempt to reach a compromise.

While Al Ahly view the Dutch tactician as their preferred choice, the club is reportedly unwilling to rush into an agreement and is carefully assessing the financial implications of the deal.

Should negotiations fail to produce a breakthrough, Al Ahly are prepared to shift their attention to Miguel Cardoso, who remains the leading alternative on the club’s shortlist.

Cardoso’s stock has risen significantly following his recent success with Mamelodi Sundowns, whom he guided to CAF Champions League glory. The Portuguese coach is understood to be open to a move to Cairo and is reportedly not concerned by the possibility of Al Ahly missing out on CAF Champions League football next season.

The former Sundowns coach is also expected to hold discussions over an improved contract with his current employers, leaving his future uncertain despite his recent continental success.

With Al Ahly eager to finalise their coaching plans ahead of the new season, a decision is expected in the coming days as the club weighs its options between Van Bommel and Cardoso.
