Iran’s preparations for the remainder of the 2026 World Cup have been disrupted by a new travel setback after members of the national team delegation were subjected to lengthy security procedures at a United States airport following their opening match of the tournament.
The incident adds to a growing list of logistical difficulties faced by the Iranian side during the competition, with the team already operating under unusual arrangements that require it to be based outside the United States despite playing matches on American soil.
According to the Iranian Football Federation, players and officials experienced significant delays at Los Angeles airport after returning from their opening fixture against New Zealand, a match that ended in an entertaining 2-2 draw.
The federation said the prolonged checks prevented the delegation from travelling as scheduled to the Mexican city of Tijuana, where the team has established its training camp and accommodation for the duration of the tournament.
Unusual World Cup arrangements
Iran’s participation in the competition has been marked by exceptional circumstances from the outset.
Although the team is competing in matches held in the United States, it has not been permitted to establish its operational headquarters there. Instead, the delegation has been forced to base itself in Tijuana, across the border in Mexico.
As a result, players and staff are required to undertake frequent cross-border journeys and undergo security procedures whenever travelling to and from matches.
The arrangement has created a demanding schedule for the squad and added a layer of complexity to its World Cup preparations.
The opening stages of the tournament have already demonstrated the impact of those challenges. Iran’s first match against New Zealand ended in a 2-2 draw, but the team’s attention has repeatedly been diverted by issues away from the pitch.
Airport delays disrupt plans
The latest disruption occurred after the New Zealand encounter, when members of the Iranian delegation underwent extended security checks at Los Angeles airport.
In a statement, the Iranian Football Federation described the delay as “unjustified”, arguing that it significantly disrupted the team’s travel plans.
The federation said the hold-up prevented the entire delegation from making its scheduled journey back to Tijuana, complicating preparations for upcoming fixtures.
Officials linked the difficulties to the broader political tensions that continue to exist between Tehran and Washington, suggesting that these issues have affected the logistical arrangements surrounding the team’s participation in the tournament.
Senior players affected
According to French outlet Foot Mercato, some members of the squad were more heavily affected by the security measures than others.
The report stated that Iran captain Mehdi Taremi and teammate Said El Haoui were subjected to particularly detailed checks.
The pair reportedly underwent extensive searches that delayed their movement and left them separated from the rest of the delegation.
While most members of the squad were able to continue their journey on time, Taremi and El Haoui were required to remain behind until official procedures had been completed.
The delays disrupted the team’s schedule and prompted the Iranian Football Federation to seek urgent solutions aimed at preventing similar situations from affecting future travel.
Balancing Football and External Pressures
For Iran, the challenge of competing at the World Cup now extends beyond events on the field.
The team must continue to navigate a demanding tournament schedule while also dealing with travel restrictions, repeated security checks and logistical complications linked to its unique accommodation arrangements.
Those circumstances have created additional pressure on a squad already focused on progressing through one of football’s most demanding competitions.
Having opened their campaign with a draw against New Zealand, Iran remain in contention in the tournament. However, the latest airport incident serves as another reminder that the team’s World Cup journey is being shaped not only by results on the pitch but also by difficulties away from it.
As the competition progresses, Iran will be hoping that attention can return to football, allowing the players to concentrate fully on their efforts to advance in the tournament despite the continuing challenges surrounding their participation.
