2026 World Cup: Switzerland hold edge as Algeria eye World Cup upset. PREVIEW

Switzerland and Algeria will battle for a place in the Round of 16 when they meet in the Round of 32 at the 2026 FIFA World Cup on Thursday, 2 July (Friday, 3 July at 03:00 GMT) at BC Place in Vancouver, Canada.

The Swiss head into the knockout stage in confident mood after topping Group B with seven points. They completed an unbeaten group campaign by defeating tournament co-hosts Canada 2-1 at BC Place, a result that secured first place and allowed them to remain in Vancouver for the knockout fixture.

Switzerland have impressed with their defensive organisation and clinical finishing, making them one of the more difficult teams to break down during the group stage.

Algeria’s route to the knockout rounds was far less straightforward. The Desert Foxes progressed as one of the best third-placed teams from Group J after a dramatic 3-3 draw with Austria in their final group match.

Although Algeria suffered a heavy defeat to Argentina earlier in the tournament, they recovered well to keep their qualification hopes alive and have shown they possess enough attacking quality to trouble any opponent.

One of the key battles is expected to come in midfield. Switzerland captain Granit Xhaka and Remo Freuler will look to control possession and dictate the tempo, while Algeria’s Houssem Aouar and Nabil Bentaleb will aim to disrupt the Swiss rhythm and create opportunities for the attacking players.

Defensively, Switzerland will rely on the experience of Xhaka and  Inter centre-back Manuel Akanji to contain an Algerian attack spearheaded by Riyad Mahrez. The veteran winger arrives in excellent form after scoring twice against Austria in Algeria’s decisive group-stage fixture.

Switzerland may also benefit from remaining at BC Place after their victory over Canada, avoiding the travel demands faced by many teams entering the knockout rounds.

According to early statistical projections, Switzerland begin the match as favourites to advance.
