Netherlands captain Virgil van Dijk has described Morocco as a “highly qualified” team and warned that Tuesday’s FIFA World Cup Round of 32 clash will be one of the Dutch side’s toughest tests of the tournament.
The two nations will meet in one of the standout knockout fixtures of the 2026 World Cup, with a place in the last 16 at stake.
Speaking during the pre-match press conference, the Liverpool defender praised the overall quality of the Moroccan squad, insisting the Atlas Lions possess talent and experience across every area of the pitch.
Van Dijk highlighted several of Morocco’s key players, pointing to the strength and balance that have made them one of the tournament’s most respected teams.
He singled out Achraf Hakimi as one of the best right-backs in world football, while also praising the attacking qualities of Ismael Saibari, describing the midfielder as a player enjoying an outstanding season at club level.
The Dutch captain also acknowledged the influence of Morocco’s experienced goalkeeper, the creativity of Brahim Díaz and the emergence of highly-rated young midfielder Ayoub Bouaddi, whom he described as one of the country’s brightest prospects.
According to Van Dijk, Morocco’s greatest strength extends beyond individual talent.
The 33-year-old believes the Atlas Lions combine technical quality with strong tactical organisation and collective discipline, making them a difficult opponent for any nation.
The Netherlands, he said, have invested significant time analysing Morocco’s style of play and identifying the strengths that have carried them into the knockout rounds.
Van Dijk also admitted the encounter carries added significance because of the close historical and cultural ties between the Netherlands and Morocco.
“It has a special character due to the ties that bind the Netherlands and Morocco,” he said.
Despite the emotional backdrop, the Dutch skipper stressed that the focus remains entirely on progressing to the next round.
“It’s a win-or-lose situation.”
With both teams viewed as genuine contenders to make a deep run in the tournament, Tuesday’s clash is expected to be one of the most compelling fixtures of the Round of 32.
Morocco will look to continue their impressive World Cup campaign, while the Netherlands aim to use their experience and attacking quality to secure a place in the last 16.
