2026 World Cup: Injury concern clouds Brazil right flank as Morocco opener approaches

Brazil head coach Carlo Ancelotti has indicated he has already settled on his preferred starting line-up for their opening match of the 2026 FIFA World Cup against Morocco, following a 2-1 warm-up victory over Egypt.

Speaking after the friendly, the Italian coach said he had “finalized” his starting eleven and now has a “very clear vision of the situation” ahead of the tournament’s opening fixtures. The comments suggest Brazil’s preparations are entering their final tactical phase, with Morocco already at the centre of their planning.

The Seleção controlled much of their latest warm-up match, underlining their attacking strength and squad depth. Goalscoring once again highlighted Brazil’s options from the bench, with Endrick coming on to secure the victory after Egypt had been pushed back for large periods of the contest.

Ancelotti was keen to stress the importance of squad balance rather than individual contributions, but made clear that the young forward remains an important part of his plans. His introduction and decisive impact reinforced Brazil’s ability to influence games from the bench, a trait the coach appears to value highly heading into a major tournament.

Much of Brazil’s attacking structure against Egypt revolved around Vinicius Júnior and Raphinha, both of whom started the match and were praised for their understanding and movement in the final third. According to Ancelotti, their connection was key in generating several attacking opportunities, offering an early indication of how Brazil intend to stretch opposition defences in the United States.

However, the match was not without concern. Attention quickly shifted to the right side of defence after Wesley, who had been expected to feature prominently in that position, was forced off just 17 minutes into the game. The coach later described the issue as a muscle problem, with further assessment required before a final diagnosis could be confirmed.

Ancelotti noted that Danilo could provide cover in that role due to his versatility, offering a potential solution should Wesley be unavailable for the tournament’s opening match. The situation has since evolved, with Wesley ruled out and Ederson of Atalanta called up as a replacement option.

For Brazil, the balance between settled attacking patterns and defensive uncertainty on the right flank remains one of the final issues to resolve before facing Morocco. The World Cup opener is now firmly in focus, and Ancelotti’s remarks suggest that much of his thinking is already locked in.

Morocco, meanwhile, will take note of Brazil’s attacking fluency and evolving defensive adjustments as both teams prepare for a high-profile Group C clash that could set the tone for their tournament campaigns.
