2026 World Cup: Ghana brace up for tough group L games

Ghana have been drawn into a challenging Group L for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, where they will come up against England, Croatia and Panama in the tournament’s opening phase.

The Black Stars, who are preparing for their fifth appearance at football’s biggest global event, discovered their group-stage opponents following the draw for the competition. Ghana will join three nations with differing World Cup histories as they bid to advance beyond the first round.

The West African side has previously featured at the World Cup in 2006, 2010, 2014 and 2022. Their participation in 2026 will mark another chapter in the country’s history on the international stage.

Among Ghana’s opponents, England are the only team they have faced before. The two nations met in an international friendly in March 2011, with the encounter ending in a 1-1 draw. That remains the sole meeting between the countries, meaning their upcoming World Cup clash will be their first competitive encounter.

England are expected to provide one of the sternest tests in the group, with both teams looking to make a strong start to their campaigns. While Ghana will take confidence from avoiding defeat in their only previous meeting, the World Cup setting presents a very different challenge.

Croatia, meanwhile, will be unfamiliar opposition for the Black Stars. The two countries have never faced each other in any previous international match. Their first-ever meeting will therefore take place on one of football’s biggest stages, adding further intrigue to the group.

Panama will also be new opponents for Ghana. The nations have never played against each other before, making their Group L fixture another historic first. The match will offer both sides an opportunity to establish a head-to-head record while pursuing crucial points in the race to qualify for the knockout rounds.

With England, Croatia and Panama all standing between Ghana and progression, the Black Stars face a demanding task in Group L. However, the draw also presents the opportunity for several landmark encounters, including first-time meetings with both Croatia and Panama.

As Ghana prepare for their fifth World Cup campaign, attention will now turn to analysing their opponents and building towards what promises to be a highly competitive group-stage challenge.

The draw sets the stage for a series of intriguing contests, with Ghana hoping to add another memorable chapter to their World Cup story when the tournament gets underway in 2026.
