2026 World cup: Cristiano Ronaldo’s world cup farewell ends in Portugal defeat

Portugal captain Cristiano Ronaldo has played his final World Cup match after Spain secured a late 1-0 victory in the last 16 of the 2026 tournament in Dallas.

Ronaldo’s hopes of leading Portugal to a first World Cup title ended when Mikel Merino scored in the closing moments of the match at AT&T Stadium in the United States.

The defeat brought an end to Portugal’s campaign and closed the final chapter of Ronaldo’s World Cup career, which stretched across six consecutive editions of the competition.

The 41-year-old left the pitch in tears after the final whistle, as supporters inside the stadium chanted his name. Several Spain players, including Lamine Yamal, approached the Portugal captain to embrace him and acknowledge a career that has defined an era of international football.

Before the match, Ronaldo had suggested that the tournament could represent his final appearance at a World Cup.

“Regardless of what happens tomorrow, I will leave this place with a clear conscience.”

His final tournament match was his 27th appearance at the World Cup. Across six editions, Ronaldo scored 11 goals and became one of the most recognisable figures in the history of the competition.

A World Cup career spanning two decades

Ronaldo’s World Cup journey began in Germany in 2006, when he made his first appearance in Portugal’s opening match against Angola in Cologne.

Portugal went on to reach the semi-finals in that tournament, matching the country’s best-ever World Cup performance. Ronaldo played a central role in the side during a campaign that marked the beginning of his long association with football’s biggest international stage.

He returned for every World Cup that followed, appearing in South Africa in 2010, Brazil in 2014, Russia in 2018 and Qatar in 2022, before making his final appearance in the 2026 edition.

Over those tournaments, Ronaldo remained a constant presence for Portugal, carrying the responsibility of captaincy and becoming the focal point of the national team’s ambitions at successive finals.

The loss to Spain means Portugal’s wait for a first World Cup title continues. For Ronaldo, it also means his long pursuit of the one major international trophy that eluded him has ended.

A record that stands alone

Ronaldo leaves the World Cup with a place among a small group of players to have appeared at six separate tournaments.

Only Lionel Messi and Guillermo Ochoa have also featured in six World Cups, placing Ronaldo among the competition’s most durable and influential figures.

However, Ronaldo holds an achievement that no other player has matched. He remains the only footballer to score in each of the six World Cup editions in which he played.

That record underlines his longevity at the highest level, from his first goal-scoring years with Portugal in Germany to his final appearance in the United States two decades later.

His departure from the World Cup stage was marked by disappointment for Portugal, but also by recognition from fans and opponents alike.

Ronaldo’s final match did not deliver the ending he had hoped for, yet his 27 appearances, 11 goals and six-tournament scoring record ensure that his place in World Cup history will remain secure.
