2026 World Cup: Bensebaïni admits Algeria were outclassed by Argentina after World C defeat

Algeria defender Ramy Bensebaïni has conceded that his side were unable to match Argentina’s quality after the Fennecs suffered a 3-0 defeat to the reigning world champions in their opening match of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The experienced defender offered a candid assessment of the result, acknowledging that Algeria’s tactical approach was ultimately neutralised by an Argentina side led by Lionel Messi and renowned for its technical excellence.

Algeria had entered the contest hoping to disrupt their opponents with an aggressive pressing game and a high defensive line. However, Bensebaïni admitted the plan proved difficult to sustain against a team capable of controlling possession and exploiting space with precision.

“We knew it was going to be a difficult match. We tried to play with a high block, to press them, but it was Argentina. They were strong, with clean ball distribution.”

Argentina’s composure on the ball and ability to move possession quickly prevented Algeria from imposing their preferred style for significant periods of the match, eventually allowing the South Americans to take control.

Despite the scoreline, Bensebaïni felt Algeria showed signs of improvement after the interval and briefly threatened to make a contest of the game.

“In the second half, we managed to get back into the game. But in trying to push forward, we left gaps, and they took advantage of them. When we woke up, it was already too late.”

As Algeria committed more players forward in search of a route back into the match, Argentina capitalised on the additional space available, extending their lead and effectively putting the result beyond doubt.

Bensebaïni also addressed the controversy surrounding Argentina’s opening goal, which involved teammate Aïssa Mandi. However, the defender stopped short of criticising the officials and said the team would review the incident.

“I didn’t notice if there was a foul on Aïssa Mandi during the first goal. We’re going to review the videos and correct our mistakes.”

The defeat leaves Algeria facing a challenging path to the knockout stages, but Bensebaïni insisted the team’s qualification hopes remain alive with two group matches still to play.

“There is still hope with two matches left to play. We will do everything we can to get a positive result.”

The defender called for unity and determination as Algeria look to recover from their opening setback and revive their campaign.

Before concluding his remarks, Bensebaïni also apologised to supporters and thanked them for their backing despite the disappointing result.

“We thank the Algerian fans for their unwavering support and we apologize for tonight’s result. We hope to win the next matches.”

His comments reflected both the frustration of a heavy defeat and the belief within the Algeria camp that there is still time to turn their World Cup fortunes around.
