2026 World Cup: Belgium crush USA to end co-hosts’ World Cup dream

Belgium ended the United States’ 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign with an emphatic 4-1 victory, eliminating the final remaining co-host from the tournament and booking a quarter-final meeting with Spain.

Charles de Ketelaere starred with two goals as Belgium outclassed the Americans in their Round of 16 encounter, while Hans Vanaken and substitute Romelu Lukaku also found the net in a commanding display that underlined the European side’s title ambitions.

For the United States, the defeat marked the end of a historic home tournament and left North America without a representative in the competition after the earlier eliminations of Canada and Mexico.

Belgium made their intentions clear from the opening stages and nearly scored inside the first minute when Timothy Castagne forced goalkeeper Matt Freese into a full-length save.

The pressure eventually told in the ninth minute.

Nicolas Raskin delivered a pass across the face of goal that De Ketelaere converted from close range to hand Belgium an early advantage.

The United States struggled to establish any rhythm for much of the opening half, although they found an equaliser against the run of play midway through the period.

Malik Tillman’s free-kick in the 31st minute took a significant deflection off Hans Vanaken before finding the back of the net, giving the home supporters hope that their side could recover.

That optimism lasted only two minutes.

Belgium restored their lead almost immediately as Leandro Trossard delivered a cross that De Ketelaere met with a header to score his second goal of the evening.

The quick response allowed Belgium to regain complete control of the contest before the interval.

The Americans entered the match with Folarin Balogun back in the starting line-up after FIFA suspended his automatic one-match ban for 12 months.

Balogun had originally been sent off during the previous round, but the disciplinary decision was reviewed after public attention surrounding the case.

FIFA President Gianni Infantino had confirmed earlier that he received a call from United States President Donald Trump regarding the suspension, while insisting the governing body’s judicial process remained independent.

Despite returning to the team, Balogun struggled to influence proceedings.

Belgium’s defence kept the tournament’s leading American scorer largely quiet throughout the match, with the striker isolated for long spells and registering only limited involvement during the opening half.

The European side effectively settled the contest after the restart.

Goalkeeper Matt Freese hesitated while attempting to play out from the back, allowing De Ketelaere to challenge for possession.

The loose ball eventually fell to Vanaken, who calmly guided his effort into the bottom corner from outside the penalty area to extend Belgium’s lead to 3-1.

The mistake summed up a frustrating evening for the United States, whose defensive lapses proved costly against clinical opponents.

Belgium continued to create chances as the Americans struggled to respond, with the European side maintaining control of possession and dictating the tempo.

Substitute Romelu Lukaku added further gloss to the scoreline deep into second-half stoppage time.

The experienced striker finished from a tight angle with a low shot into the far corner after another defensive error, sealing a comprehensive 4-1 victory.

The result sends Belgium into the quarter-finals, where they will face Spain in Los Angeles after the European champions defeated Portugal 1-0.

For the United States, the defeat ends an encouraging tournament in disappointing fashion.

The hosts had hoped to make a deep run on home soil but were unable to match Belgium’s quality over 90 minutes.

From an African perspective, the outcome also carries significance as another European heavyweight progresses to the quarter-finals, narrowing the path for Africa’s remaining representatives still chasing a first-ever World Cup title.

Belgium, meanwhile, advance with growing confidence after producing one of the most convincing performances of the knockout stage.
