Zubizarreta shuts down Al Ahly links with firm denial

Former Barcelona director rejects reports linking him with Egyptian champions

Former FC Barcelona sporting director Andoni Zubizarreta has dismissed speculation suggesting he is in discussions with Al Ahly over a potential move to Cairo.

Reports had indicated that Zubizarreta was among the leading candidates to take over as sporting director at the Egyptian club ahead of next season, amid expectations of internal restructuring. The role is currently held by Mohamed Youssef, who is widely expected to step down at the end of the current campaign.

However, Zubizarreta has categorically denied any involvement in such negotiations.

He said: “There is nothing between me and Al-Ahly,”

Club expected to reshape football structure

Al Ahly are understood to be planning changes to both their administrative and technical setup once the season concludes. The anticipated departure of Youssef has fuelled speculation over who might take on one of the most influential roles within the club’s football operations.

Zubizarreta’s name had emerged due to his extensive experience in European football, particularly during his time at Barcelona, where he served as sporting director between 2010 and 2015. His profile, combined with previous roles across multiple leagues, made him a notable figure in discussions surrounding the vacancy.

Despite that, his firm denial appears to rule out any immediate prospect of him joining the Cairo-based side.

Distinguished career in playing and management

Before moving into executive roles, Zubizarreta enjoyed a long and successful playing career as a goalkeeper. He represented leading Spanish clubs including Athletic Bilbao, Barcelona and Valencia.

Following his retirement, he transitioned into football administration, taking on the sporting director position at Athletic Bilbao before moving to Barcelona. He later worked abroad with Olympique Marseille, Monterrey and FC Porto, leaving his most recent role in August last year.

Focus remains on domestic campaign

While speculation over off-field changes continues, Al Ahly remain focused on their ongoing league campaign in the Egyptian Premier League.

The team are preparing to face Smouha in the second round of the championship stage. Their title hopes have been complicated following a 1-1 draw against Ceramica Cleopatra in the opening round.

That result leaves Al Ahly five points behind current league leaders Zamalek, increasing the pressure on the reigning champions as they attempt to retain their title.

 Speculation fades but uncertainty remains

Zubizarreta’s clear statement brings an end, for now, to speculation linking him with Al Ahly. However, with expected changes to the club’s football structure still looming, attention will likely turn to alternative candidates as the Egyptian side plans for the future both on and off the pitch.
