Zamalek finds new edge as Dabbagh scores decisive goals

Palestinian forward Oday Dabbagh has emerged as a pivotal figure in Zamalek’s recent resurgence under coach Moataz Gamal, demonstrating his knack for scoring and creating opportunities. His latest contribution came in the Confederation Cup quarter-final against Congolese side Otoho, where he netted the second goal in the 24th minute to secure Zamalek’s passage to the semi-finals.

Dabbagh’s goal followed a saved shot by teammate Abdullah El-Said, and the striker’s instinctive reaction in capitalising on opponents’ errors has become a trademark. Similar decisive strikes were seen earlier in the season against Ismaily Electricity and Al-Masry in the Confederation Cup.

Reaching new heights

Since joining Zamalek at the start of the season, Dabbagh has scored ten goals across 31 appearances and registered one assist. His tally of three goals in this year’s Confederation Cup positions him close to the top scorers list, currently led by CR Belouizdad’s Abdelnour Ihab Belhossini with four goals.

While traditionally a central striker, Dabbagh has been deployed on the wings due to the presence of Nasser Mansi as Zamalek’s main striker. Analysis of his movement across the last five matches shows him operating effectively on both right and left flanks, demonstrating his versatility.

Adding a new dimension

Dabbagh’s most notable contribution is his proficiency with his left foot, a skill Zamalek had lacked since the departures of Mostafa Fathi and the retirement of Mahmoud Abdel-Razek Shikabala. Of his ten goals this season, six were scored with his left foot, three with his right, and one with his head, all from open play inside the penalty area. Remarkably, Zamalek have scored only six left-footed goals in the Egyptian League this season—matching Dabbagh’s individual tally.

Despite an expected goals (xG) average of 7.38, Dabbagh has surpassed expectations, often converting difficult chances into crucial goals. He is particularly noted for decisive strikes, such as the equaliser in the first leg of the CAF Confederation Cup quarter-final against Otoho.

As Zamalek look to strengthen their continental campaign, Dabbagh’s combination of left-footed precision, adaptability, and eye for goal positions him as a key figure in the club’s attack, providing the White Knights with the attacking dimension they have long sought.
