Wydad turn to Patrice Carteron following confederation cup elimination

French coach Patrice Carteron is reportedly on the verge of taking charge of Wydad Athletic Club, following the club’s decision to part ways with head coach Mohamed Amine Benhachem.

The move comes in the wake of Wydad’s exit from the CAF Confederation Cup, where they were eliminated in the quarter-finals after defeat to fellow Moroccan side Olympique Safi. The result prompted swift action from the club’s management, who have now turned to an experienced figure in African football to lead their next phase.

Carteron Expected to Lead Rebuild

According to reports in Moroccan media, Carteron is set to assume responsibility for the Casablanca-based club, with expectations centred on restoring domestic success and re-establishing Wydad’s presence on the continental stage.

One of the primary objectives outlined for the incoming coach is to guide the team to the league title and secure qualification for the CAF Champions League, a competition Wydad has historically targeted as a measure of its status among Africa’s elite clubs.

Coaching Experience Across Africa and Beyond

Carteron brings a wealth of managerial experience, having worked across several high-profile clubs and national teams. His coaching career began in 2012 when he took charge of the Mali national football team, marking the start of a journey that would see him manage teams in multiple countries.

He has previously held positions at Raja Casablanca, one of Wydad’s fiercest domestic rivals, as well as Egyptian giants Zamalek SC and Al Ahly SC. His résumé also includes spells with TP Mazembe, Al Nassr FC, and Qatar’s Umm Salal SC.

Carteron most recently left his role at Umm Salal in January after a single season in charge, making him available for a return to management.

A Critical Moment for Wydad

Wydad’s decision to seek new leadership reflects the pressure on the club to maintain competitiveness both domestically and in African competitions. The recent Confederation Cup elimination has heightened expectations for a swift turnaround.

The appointment of a coach with Carteron’s track record suggests a strategic move aimed at stabilising performance and achieving immediate results. His familiarity with African football, including previous experience in Morocco, could prove a significant factor in his potential success.

Looking Ahead

Should the deal be finalised, Carteron will inherit a squad seeking to recover from a disappointing continental campaign. The challenge will be to rebuild confidence while aligning the team with the club’s ambitions of reclaiming major honours.

For Wydad supporters, the prospect of Carteron’s arrival signals a renewed push for success. With domestic titles and a return to the CAF Champions League firmly in focus, the coming months are likely to define the direction of the club under its expected new leadership.
