Wydad Athletic Club have announced that their board of directors will step down, following a sustained run of poor results and increasing pressure from supporters.
The decision comes after a difficult period for the Moroccan side, who have failed to win any of their last six matches. A 1-0 defeat to Renaissance Zemamra proved to be the tipping point in a run that has seen confidence around the club decline sharply.
In a statement, the board confirmed that it would resign at the upcoming ordinary elective general meeting, citing responsibility and the need to ensure continuity.
“The board of directors of Wydad Club announces its resignation during the upcoming ordinary elective general meeting, in respect for responsibility and current obligations,” the statement read.
Plans have been outlined for a structured transition, with registration for the next season set to run from 5 May to 5 June, followed by a candidacy period for the presidency between 5 June and 20 June. The process is intended to facilitate what the club described as a “smooth democratic transition”.
The leadership change comes against a backdrop of instability on the pitch and in the dugout.
Earlier, Wydad parted company with former head coach Patrice Carteron after a short and unsuccessful spell in charge. He has since been replaced by Mohamed Benchrifa, who has been tasked with improving results.
However, performances have yet to recover. During Carteron’s tenure, the team failed to secure a victory in five matches, recording two draws and three defeats. Among those results were a 2-1 loss to bottom-placed Union Yaacoub El Mansour and the recent defeat to Zemamra.
The poor run has had a direct impact on Wydad’s position in the Botola Pro standings. The club sit fourth on 31 points after 18 matches, seven points behind the league leaders.
With the season entering a critical phase, Wydad face mounting pressure to stabilise both their performances and internal structure.
Their next fixture against Meknes offers an immediate opportunity to respond, but attention will remain on how the club navigates this period of transition.
For a side accustomed to competing for honours, the current situation represents a significant challenge, with changes both on and off the pitch now seen as necessary to restore stability.
