World Cup uncertainty for Algeria after Luca Zidane fracture

Algeria’s preparations for the 2026 World Cup have been dealt a significant setback following confirmation that goalkeeper Luca Zidane has suffered a fractured jaw and chin, raising concerns over his availability for the tournament.

The injury occurred during a Spanish second division match between Granada CF and UD Almería, when Zidane collided with Brazilian forward Talles Henrique late in the game. The incident took place in the 87th minute and led to a stoppage of approximately four minutes, after the goalkeeper suffered dizziness and bleeding from the mouth before leaving the pitch at Los Cármenes Stadium.

Initial signs suggested the collision might be minor, but further medical examinations revealed more serious damage. In an official statement, Granada confirmed: “Medical tests carried out on Luca Zidane, following his concussion during the last match against Almeria, have shown that the goalkeeper is also suffering from a fracture in his jaw and chin.”

The club added that “The player will decide, in consultation with the club’s medical staff, on the treatment plan in the coming hours.” The severity of the injury means surgery remains a possibility, although a final decision has yet to be made.

Timing compounds Algeria’s concerns

The development comes at a critical moment for Algeria, with the World Cup set to take place in the United States, Canada and Mexico in just over six weeks. Zidane is currently regarded as the first-choice goalkeeper for the national team, often referred to as “The Greens”, making his potential absence a major concern.

Head coach Vladimir Petković is now facing a growing selection dilemma. Reports indicate that the team’s other goalkeeping options, Anthony Mandrea and Melvin Mastel, are also dealing with injuries, further limiting available choices ahead of the tournament.

According to reports, Zidane’s participation in the 2026 World Cup is now uncertain, adding to the pressure on the Algerian coaching staff as they attempt to finalise their squad.

World Cup ambitions under threat

Algeria have been drawn into a competitive group for the tournament, where they are set to face Jordan, Argentina and Austria. The uncertainty surrounding their goalkeeping options could have a significant impact on their chances, particularly given Zidane’s importance to the squad.

What initially appeared to be a routine collision has evolved into a potentially decisive setback for both club and country. With time running short before the start of the World Cup, attention will now turn to Zidane’s recovery timeline and whether he can regain fitness in time to participate.

Uncertain road to recovery

The coming days are expected to be crucial as decisions are made regarding treatment and rehabilitation. While the player and medical staff assess the best course of action, Algeria must also prepare for the possibility of entering the tournament without their first-choice goalkeeper.

As the situation develops, the team’s ability to adapt could prove vital in determining how they approach one of football’s biggest stages.
