Vinicius Junior is expected to enter the 2026 FIFA World Cup under increasing scrutiny as his contract situation with Real Madrid remains unresolved, with the tournament potentially becoming a decisive moment in negotiations between the player and the Spanish giants.
The Brazil forward has just one year remaining on his current contract at Real Madrid, which is due to expire in June 2027. Although both parties have repeatedly expressed a desire to continue the relationship, no agreement has yet been reached over an extension.
According to Spanish newspaper AS, negotiations between the club and the player have been frozen for around 10 months following complications linked to Vinicius’s relationship with former coach Xabi Alonso.
The report stated: “10 months have passed since negotiations between the player and the club regarding the contract extension stopped, since the Club World Cup last summer, and the file has completely frozen due to Vinicius Junior’s repeated crises with (his former Spanish coach) Xabi Alonso.”
Despite the stalled discussions, Vinicius has consistently spoken publicly about his wish to remain at the Santiago Bernabeu before eventually returning to his Brazilian roots with CR Flamengo later in his career.
That ambition reportedly aligns with the vision of Real Madrid president Florentino Perez, who is also believed to favour keeping the Brazilian international at the club long term. However, negotiations have yet to produce a breakthrough.
Real Madrid are now expected to closely assess Vinicius’s performances with Brazil national football team during the upcoming World Cup, with the tournament potentially altering the balance of power in future talks.
AS reported that “Madrid will closely monitor Vinicius’s performance during the upcoming World Cup finals, which will largely determine the course of post-tournament negotiations to renew his contract.”
The newspaper added that the competition could significantly strengthen the player’s negotiating position if he delivers an outstanding tournament.
“The World Cup will directly affect Vinicius’s situation; if he has a strong tournament and emerges from it in a more brilliant form, his negotiating position with Real Madrid will increase, and he may even become a very tempting target for any big club that wants to sign him in a free transfer deal.”
Under FIFA regulations, Vinicius would be free to negotiate with overseas clubs from January if no renewal agreement is reached before then. That scenario could increase pressure on Real Madrid to either secure his future or consider selling him before the final year of his contract expires.
The report also suggested that if the forward fails to impress during the World Cup, Real Madrid could regain leverage in negotiations. In that case, the club may seek to renew his deal under their preferred financial conditions or potentially approve a transfer to avoid losing him without a fee.
Financial terms remain one of the central issues in discussions. When talks slowed last July, Vinicius reportedly lowered his salary expectations compared with the demands he made after winning “The Best” award for 2024.
At that stage, the Brazilian was said to have requested a net annual salary of 30 million euros.
His current agreement, signed during the 2022 renewal process, reportedly guarantees him 75 million euros over five years through a progressive payment structure averaging 15 million euros net per season until 2027.
With the World Cup approaching, Vinicius now faces a tournament that may influence not only Brazil’s ambitions on the global stage, but also the direction of his long-term future in Madrid.
