Egypt captain Mohamed Salah is reportedly on the verge of joining Turkish giants Beşiktaş after rejecting a lucrative offer from Saudi Arabia in favour of remaining in European football.
According to Turkish newspaper Sabah, Salah has turned down an annual salary of €20 million from a Saudi club, choosing instead to pursue a new challenge in the Turkish Süper Lig.
Salah prioritises European football
The report claims the former Liverpool forward is determined to continue competing at the highest level in Europe despite receiving financially attractive offers from the Gulf region.
During talks with Beşiktaş sporting director Önder Özen, Salah reportedly explained his motivation for remaining on the continent.
“I want to play at the highest level again and stay in Europe to show everyone the real Salah. I am very excited and working very hard.”
His reported stance reflects a desire to continue competing in one of Europe’s top leagues rather than moving outside the continent at this stage of his career.
Two-year deal reportedly agreed
According to Turkish journalist Serhan Dikme, Beşiktaş have already reached an agreement with Salah over a two-year contract.
The report adds that a final meeting between the two parties is expected to take place within the next 48 hours to finalise the remaining details and complete the signing.
Italiano eager to secure deal
Beşiktaş head coach Vincenzo Italiano is said to be a strong supporter of the move, viewing Salah as the key addition needed to strengthen the club’s attack ahead of the new season.
The Italian coach reportedly believes the Egyptian forward can become the focal point of his new-look side as Beşiktaş aim to challenge for domestic honours.
If completed, the transfer would represent one of the biggest signings in Turkish football in recent years, with Salah choosing to remain in Europe despite the financial incentives offered elsewhere.
Neither Beşiktaş nor Mohamed Salah has officially confirmed the reported agreement.
