World Cup 2026: Egypt national team squad – Mohamed Salah leads Pharaohs’ bid to finally escape group stage misery

Egypt arrive at the 2026 World Cup with renewed belief after an unbeaten qualifying campaign, as the “Pharaohs” aim to correct a long history of early exits on football’s biggest stage under the leadership of Mohamed Salah and a strengthened supporting cast.

This will be Egypt’s fourth World Cup appearance, and expectations are higher than ever that they can finally progress beyond the group stage for the first time in their history.

Egypt’s path to North America was built on consistency and defensive strength, as they went through African qualifying unbeaten with eight wins and two draws.

They conceded just two goals across 10 matches, underlining a disciplined structure that has become the foundation of their recent progress.

The campaign has strengthened belief across the country that this generation could achieve what previous Egyptian teams were unable to deliver on the world stage.

Searching for a first breakthrough

Despite regular qualification, Egypt’s World Cup record remains a source of frustration.

They have appeared at the tournament in 1934, 1990, 2018 and now 2026, but have never reached the knockout stages. Across seven matches, they have yet to record a single win.

Their return to the tournament in 2018 ended in disappointment, with three defeats in the group stage, and the current squad carries a strong desire to change that narrative.

Hassan leads a “warrior” identity

He is a legend of Egyptian football

At the helm is Hossam Hassan, one of Egyptian football’s most iconic figures both as a player and manager.

Appointed in 2024, Hassan has brought a more aggressive and emotionally driven identity to the national team, helping guide Egypt through their first unbeaten qualifying campaign in decades.

His leadership has reinforced a “warrior” mentality within the squad, with emphasis on resilience, structure, and collective responsibility.

Salah remains the focal point

Much of Egypt’s attention still centres on Mohamed Salah, who continues to lead the team as captain and remains the most influential figure in the squad.

Salah scored nine goals during qualifying, though much of the burden in later matches was shared across the attacking line, reflecting a gradual shift away from total dependence on the Liverpool forward.

At 34, this tournament may represent one of his final opportunities to define his international legacy with Egypt.

Marmoush adds new attacking dimension

Egyptians have high expectations for Marmoush

Alongside Salah, Egypt are increasingly looking to Omar Marmoush as a major attacking force.

The Manchester City striker brings pace, movement, and direct attacking threat, offering Egypt an alternative outlet in transition and helping to ease pressure on their captain.

Players such as Trezeguet and Mostafa Mohamed also contribute depth, giving Egypt a more varied attacking profile than in previous campaigns.

Group stage challenge ahead

Egypt have been drawn into a competitive group alongside Belgium, Iran and New Zealand, beginning with a demanding opener against Belgium.

While the defensive record suggests they can remain competitive, Egypt’s ability to convert chances against stronger opposition will likely decide whether they can finally reach the knockout rounds.

A chance to change history

Egypt’s 2026 campaign is shaped by a combination of momentum and historical pressure. An unbeaten qualifying run has raised expectations, but the lack of previous knockout-stage experience remains a psychological hurdle.

With Salah still central and Marmoush emerging as a powerful complement, the Pharaohs arrive in North America believing that this generation has a genuine opportunity to rewrite their World Cup story.

Whether that belief becomes reality will depend on whether their defensive strength can finally be matched by consistent attacking efficiency at the highest level.
