USM Alger held by 10-man OC Safi in frustrating stalemate

Dominant hosts fail to convert chances against 10-man Moroccan side

USM Alger were left to rue missed opportunities after being held to a 0-0 draw by OC Safi in a tightly contested CAF Confederation Cup knockout encounter.

Despite controlling large portions of the match and enjoying a clear advantage in possession, the Algerian side could not find a breakthrough against a disciplined and resilient OC Safi defence, even after the visitors were reduced to 10 men.

Possession dominance fails to produce breakthrough

From the outset, USM Alger asserted their authority, maintaining around 60% possession compared to their opponents’ 40%. Their approach centred on quick ball movement and stretching the opposition, aiming to create openings in the final third.

The hosts translated that control into attacking intent, registering 17 shots over the course of the game. However, a lack of clinical finishing ultimately undermined their efforts.

OC Safi, although seeing less of the ball, remained a threat on the counter-attack. The Moroccan side produced 11 attempts of their own, demonstrating efficiency in transition and ensuring the contest remained competitive throughout.

Disallowed goal adds to frustration

The closest USM Alger came to scoring arrived when Z. Draoui found the back of the net, appearing to give his side the lead. However, celebrations were cut short as the goal was disallowed, leaving players and supporters visibly disappointed.

Both teams created two clear-cut chances each, highlighting how evenly matched the sides were in terms of genuine goal-scoring opportunities despite the hosts’ territorial dominance.

Set-pieces and discipline shape the encounter

Set-pieces played a significant role in sustaining pressure from USM Alger, who earned 14 free kicks compared to just four for OC Safi. These situations allowed the home side to repeatedly test the visitors’ defensive organisation.

Defensively, both teams showed determination, with OC Safi slightly edging the tackling statistics, recording 17 tackles to USM Alger’s 15. Their physical approach disrupted the rhythm of the Algerian side but also led to disciplinary issues.

The Moroccan team accumulated four yellow cards during the match, reflecting their increasingly aggressive attempts to contain the hosts. Their task became even more difficult after a red card reduced them to 10 players, forcing a more conservative approach in the closing stages.

Numerical advantage not enough for hosts

Despite playing against a depleted side, USM Alger were unable to capitalise. Their dominance was further reflected in passing statistics, completing 402 passes compared to OC Safi’s 279.

However, the final pass and cutting edge in front of goal proved elusive, preventing them from turning control into a decisive advantage.

Tie remains finely balanced ahead of return leg

While USM Alger may view the result as a missed opportunity, OC Safi are likely to take confidence from securing a draw under difficult circumstances, particularly after being reduced to 10 men.

Missed chances leave knockout tie wide open

The goalless draw leaves the CAF Confederation Cup tie delicately poised, with both sides aware that small margins could determine progression in the second leg. For USM Alger, improving efficiency in front of goal will be crucial, while OC Safi will look to build on their defensive resilience in the return fixture.
