Algerian football has been thrust into crisis following allegations of match-fixing and irregular betting activity during the 2025–26 season, prompting authorities to open urgent investigations into the integrity of the domestic competition.
The controversy emerged after reports highlighted suspicious links between certain league fixtures and an international betting network, raising serious concerns about the credibility of results in the Algerian Ligue Professionnelle 1.
Authorities Launch Formal Inquiry
According to the newspaper El Khabar, the head of the refereeing committee, Mehdi Abid Charef, has summoned several referees, including video assistant referees (VAR), as part of efforts to determine whether manipulation may have occurred.
The move follows mounting pressure from media and supporters, with the investigation expected to examine both officiating decisions and financial activity linked to betting markets.
Suspicious Match Raises Red Flags
At the centre of the controversy is a league match between MC Oran and ES Sétif played in November, which ended in a 0-0 draw.
The match attracted scrutiny due to contentious refereeing decisions, particularly involving VAR interventions. A penalty was overturned during the game, while other incidents described as clear infractions were reportedly ignored, fuelling debate over the officiating.
However, it is the associated betting activity that has caused the greatest concern.
Unusual Betting Patterns Detected
Data cited in the report indicated that approximately €120,000 was wagered on a draw in the match, significantly higher than the typical figure of around €10,000 for similar fixtures.
Even more striking was the concentration of bets, with 81% of all wagers reportedly placed on a draw outcome — an imbalance viewed as highly irregular in a normally competitive betting market.
In addition, around €49,000 was reportedly staked within a single minute during a critical phase of the match, coinciding with key refereeing decisions. This sudden influx of money has intensified suspicions of a coordinated effort to influence the result.
Wider Context Deepens Crisis
The investigation comes at a turbulent time for Algerian football, particularly within the refereeing system. Recent events have already placed officials under scrutiny, including the resignation of international referee Ben Yahia following a controversial match between Future Rouissat and Olympic Akbou.
That fixture was marred by chaotic scenes, including a pitch invasion and disputes over added time, which was extended from eight to 12 minutes — a decision that ultimately affected the outcome and sparked widespread criticism.
League Standings Continue Amid Uncertainty
Despite the unfolding crisis, the league season continues. MC Alger currently lead the standings with 55 points, holding an 11-point advantage over JS Saoura and with two games in hand.
At the opposite end of the table, clubs including MC El Bayadh, ES Mostaganem and Paradou AC are battling to avoid relegation, adding further tension to an already volatile season.
