Tottenham join Arsenal and Chelsea in race for Monza’s October Serie A Rising Star Gustavo Varela

Monza forward Gustavo Varela has been named Serie A Rising Star of the Month for October after an impressive start to his first season in Italian football.

The 21-year-old scored five goals in four Serie A appearances during the month and also provided an assist. His October form contributed to a remarkable overall record of nine goals in nine league matches this season, while he has also scored twice in his only Coppa Italia appearance.

Varela’s performances have now attracted interest from several leading European clubs. Tottenham Hotspur, managed by Roberto De Zerbi, are the latest side reported to be monitoring the Portugal international, joining Arsenal, Chelsea and Borussia Dortmund in the race for his signature.

RB Leipzig and Varela’s former club Benfica are also understood to be following the situation.

Monza signed the striker from Benfica B over the summer for €2.5m plus bonuses, but his rapid progress has raised the possibility of another move in the near future.

His recognition as the Serie A Rising Star of the Month for October has also reportedly helped secure his first senior call-up for Portugal.
