South African right winger Thapelo Maseko of Mamelodi Sundowns is being linked with a move to Algerian side MC Algiers in Ligue 1. The 22-year-old, valued at around €1m, has emerged as a target for the Algiers club as they assess wide options ahead of the new campaign.
Maseko, a left-footed attacker born in Sebokeng, Gauteng, returned to Sundowns at the end of June after a loan spell with Cypriot outfit AEL Limassol during the 2025-26 season. His situation back in South Africa is now attracting attention from North Africa, with MC Algiers monitoring whether Sundowns will be open to negotiations.
Sundowns signed Maseko from SuperSport United in July 2023 and have since seen him play a part in one of the most successful periods in the club’s history. He has collected back-to-back South African league titles in 2023-24 and 2024-25, and was part of the squad that lifted the CAF Champions League in 2025-26.
Maseko also made his mark in continental competition by finishing as top goalscorer in the African Football League during the 2023-24 season, scoring two goals in that campaign as Sundowns went on to win the trophy. That impact on the African stage is believed to be a key factor in MC Algiers’ interest.
The winger’s current deal at Sundowns has not been made public, and there is no indication yet that an agreement with MC Algiers is close, with the player back on the books of the South African champions following his loan in Cyprus.
