Tanzania’s Chole named U-17 AFCON player of the tournament

Tanzania midfielder Issa Mussa Chole has been named the Best Player of the TotalEnergies Africa Cup of Nations (U-17 AFCON) Morocco 2026 after helping guide the Serengeti Boys to a historic first appearance in the tournament final.

The award capped an impressive campaign for the teenager, whose performances in midfield were instrumental as Tanzania emerged as one of the surprise packages of the competition.

Chole’s composure, consistency and ability to control matches from midfield played a key role in Tanzania’s remarkable journey to the championship match, where they were ultimately beaten by Senegal in a penalty shootout.

The midfielder was influential throughout the tournament and delivered one of his standout displays in Tanzania’s semi-final victory over Egypt, helping his side secure a place in the final for the first time in the nation’s history.

His recognition comes as part of a successful tournament for Tanzania’s emerging generation of players, with forward Dismas Shida Athanasi also claiming the Golden Boot award after an impressive goalscoring campaign.

Tanzania arrived in Morocco with modest expectations but quickly established themselves as genuine contenders. The Serengeti Boys impressed during the group stage before continuing their run with a quarter-final victory over Algeria.

Their progress also secured qualification for the FIFA Under-17 World Cup, marking another major milestone for youth football in the East African nation.

While Senegal ultimately retained continental supremacy by lifting the trophy, Tanzania’s achievements ensured they left Morocco with their reputation significantly enhanced.

The team’s run to the final was widely regarded as one of the stories of the tournament, showcasing a talented generation capable of competing with some of Africa’s traditional football powers.
