Serhou Guirassy receives hero’s welcome in Conakry after Champions League Golden Boot triumph

Serhou Guirassy was welcomed like a national hero in Conakry on Monday evening as hundreds of supporters gathered to celebrate the striker’s return with the UEFA Champions League Golden Boot following a remarkable season with Borussia Dortmund.

The 30-year-old arrived in the Guinean capital carrying the prestigious award after finishing as joint top scorer in Europe’s elite club competition during the 2024-25 campaign.

Scenes of celebration erupted at the airport as supporters wearing Dortmund’s famous yellow and black colours sang, danced and chanted in honour of the Syli National forward.

Fans waved shirts bearing Guirassy’s name while the striker proudly displayed the Golden Boot, marking one of the biggest individual achievements ever by a Guinean footballer in European competition.

The emotional reception highlighted Guirassy’s growing stature in Guinea, where his performances in both the Bundesliga and Champions League have turned him into one of the country’s most admired sporting figures.

Several senior officials were also present to welcome the striker home, including Sory Doumbouya, president of the Guinean Football Federation, and Sports Minister Cellou Baldé.

Guirassy enjoyed one of the finest seasons of his professional career in Europe, ending the Champions League campaign level with Raphinha among the competition’s top scorers.

His domestic numbers were equally impressive. The striker produced 21 goals and five assists in 30 Bundesliga appearances last season, further establishing himself among Europe’s most effective forwards.

Although his form dipped slightly towards the latter part of 2025, Guirassy has still maintained strong productivity this season, scoring 17 goals in 33 appearances across all competitions.

Attention in Guinea is now turning toward the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers, where the Syli National face a difficult challenge after being drawn alongside South Africa national football team, Kenya national football team and Eritrea national football team.

With only one qualification place available from the group, Guinea are expected to depend heavily on Guirassy’s leadership, experience and goalscoring quality as they attempt to secure a return to the continental stage.
