Mamelodi Sundowns head coach Miguel Cardoso has underlined the importance of recovery and preparation ahead of a pivotal league encounter against Kaizer Chiefs on Wednesday, as the South African title race enters a decisive phase.
The two sides are set to meet at Loftus Versfeld Stadium on 6 May, in a match widely seen as significant for both ends of the upper table. League leaders Mamelodi Sundowns are aiming to extend their advantage at the summit, while Chiefs are seeking to strengthen their grip on third place and secure continental football next season.
Sundowns currently hold a five-point lead over Orlando Pirates, although their closest rivals have played one game fewer. Victory on Wednesday would allow Sundowns to maintain control of their title ambitions with only a limited number of fixtures remaining.
Speaking ahead of the match, Cardoso highlighted the challenge posed by a Chiefs side that has had more time to recover. Sundowns enter the fixture following a recent win over Polokwane City, while Chiefs have not played since the previous week, when they were beaten 2-0 by Siwelele.
The Portuguese coach acknowledged that the difference in rest periods could influence the contest, but stressed that his own players would also be ready.
“Obviously, my people are working on that. So, tomorrow [Monday] morning for sure, or even tonight [Sunday], I’m going to start to work on that,” said Cardoso.
He described the fixture as one of the standout matches in South African football and insisted that his side must approach it with determination and respect.
“But it’s a match, it’s a match to be played with all respect by everybody. Obviously, it’s a match that is quite a big match in South Africa.
“So, we have to go for it and try to make it in the best way so that we can get the points because we need the points to proceed. That’s it.”
Cardoso reiterated that securing maximum points remains the priority, particularly given the tight schedule and limited preparation time between fixtures.
“So, the objective is the same, the way we’re going to work through. There’s not a lot of time.
“So, we have two days and we are playing. For sure, you may imagine that for us, the recovery process is the most important. They didn’t play for a long time.”
Despite concerns about fatigue, he expressed confidence that both teams would deliver a competitive contest.
“This means that they come with full energy and we will be also with full energy for sure. That’s good, good match ahead.”
With both sides pursuing key objectives, Sundowns chasing the title and Chiefs aiming for continental qualification, Wednesday’s clash is expected to have a significant bearing on how the season concludes.
