Strasbourg defender Doukouré switches allegiance to Ivory Coast

RC Strasbourg defender Ismaël Doukouré has chosen to represent Ivory Coast at international level, ending his association with France’s youth teams as he begins the process of switching sporting nationality.

The decision, confirmed by a senior official of the Ivorian Football Federation (FIF), marks a significant step in the 22-year-old’s career ahead of a crucial period for the national team.

Doukouré, who was born in France and previously featured for French youth sides, has now opted to align with his country of origin.

His move has already progressed beyond initial discussions.

The player was seen at the Ivory Coast consulate in Paris finalising administrative procedures, as part of the formal process required to complete the change.

A video circulating on social media showed the Strasbourg centre-back attending the consulate, underlining the advanced stage of the transition.

The federation has adopted a cautious approach to public announcements involving players changing nationality.

“We don’t publicize the players who join us so as not to put pressure on them. Otherwise, for Doukouré, everything happened naturally.”

Doukouré’s switch could potentially see him included in upcoming national team plans, with Ivory Coast preparing for a high-profile international friendly against France on 4 June 2026.

However, selection will depend on the coaching staff’s assessment.

“Indeed, they could all be on the June list (Gboho, Bonny, Doukouré, editor’s note) for the match against France (friendly, June 4, 2026, editor’s note), if the coach considers them to be among the best 26 Ivorians at the moment…”

The defender’s rise at club level has played a key role in attracting attention.

Currently a central figure at Strasbourg, Doukouré has established himself as a regular starter and has taken on leadership responsibilities, including wearing the captain’s armband.

Despite increased competition within the squad, he remains an important part of the team’s structure.

His experience with France’s youth teams includes participation in the UEFA European Under-21 Championship and the Olympic Games, where he was part of a squad coached by Thierry Henry that secured a silver medal.

Those appearances had positioned him as a prospect within the French system before his decision to switch allegiance.

Doukouré is not the only player to make such a choice. His Strasbourg teammate Guéla Doué, who was also eligible for France, opted to represent Ivory Coast, following a similar path taken by his brother Désiré Doué.

The trend highlights Ivory Coast’s efforts to strengthen their squad by integrating players developed in European systems.

The timing of Doukouré’s decision is particularly notable, with the FIFA World Cup approaching.

By committing to Ivory Coast, he positions himself as a potential option for selection should he complete the eligibility process in time.
