Stellenbosch FC have completed the permanent signing of 20-year-old centre-back Gopolang Taunyana from Kaizer Chiefs, making him the fourth player to move between the two clubs during the current transfer window.
The South Africa Under-20 international has signed ahead of the new Betway Premiership season and will wear the No. 21 shirt at the Cape Winelands club.
Taunyana follows George Matlou, Given Msimango and Ashley Du Preez in leaving Kaizer Chiefs for Stellenbosch FC this window. He could make his debut when Stellenbosch FC begin their Betway Premiership campaign against Polokwane City on 11 August.
The defender came through the Kaizer Chiefs development system and has been regarded as one of the country’s most promising young defensive players. His move to Stellenbosch gives him the opportunity to continue his progression at a club that has developed a strong reputation for giving young talent a pathway into senior football.
Taunyana has also spoken about why he believes Stellenbosch FC is the right environment for the next stage of his career.
His route into professional football has been unusual. Born in Johannesburg, Taunyana qualified as a referee in 2021 after completing an officiating course at Old Eds. A year later, while still only 16, he was named Referee of the Tournament at the Engen Knockout Challenge.
He eventually returned to his original ambition of becoming a footballer and joined the Kaizer Chiefs academy. His experience as an official helped him develop several key aspects of his game, including his positioning, communication and tactical understanding.
The tall defender soon became an important member of the Kaizer Chiefs reserve team. He impressed in the DStv Diski Challenge, as well as in a number of youth competitions, and continued to establish himself as a player with significant potential.
In 2024, Taunyana returned to the Engen Knockout Challenge as a player rather than a referee. He helped the Kaizer Chiefs Under-18 team win the competition and was named Defender of the Tournament.
He also played a significant part in Kaizer Chiefs’ challenge for the 2024/25 DStv Diski Challenge title. His performances at club level led to international recognition and a place in the South Africa Under-20 squad.
Taunyana helped Amajita win the COSAFA Under-20 Championship before contributing to their success at the CAF Under-20 Africa Cup of Nations in Egypt, where South Africa lifted the trophy.
Stellenbosch FC will now hope the latest step in his career allows him to build on that rapid rise. The club’s record of developing young players will provide Taunyana with the chance to adapt to senior football and compete for a regular place in the Betway Premiership.
His arrival also strengthens a growing connection between Stellenbosch FC and Kaizer Chiefs, with four players now having made the same move during the current transfer window.
