Sporting CP hold off Shakhtar Donetsk as Issa Doumbia strikes at Stamford Bridge

Sporting CP secured a hard-fought 1–0 victory over Shakhtar Donetsk at Stamford Bridge on Tuesday, 3 November, with Issa Doumbia’s second-half goal settling a match the Portuguese side could not consider safe until the final whistle.

Doumbia scored in the 59th minute to give Sporting their third win in four matches and take them to nine points in the Champions League. Shakhtar, who were playing their home fixture at Chelsea’s stadium, created several chances before and after the decisive goal, while Sporting missed opportunities to make the result more comfortable.

The Ukrainian side made the quicker start against Sporting’s three-man defence. Rui Silva had to save a long-range effort from Pedro Henrique in the sixth minute, but the Portugal goalkeeper dealt with the early threat.

Both teams continued to find openings. Sporting looked to exploit the wide areas through Geny Catamo on the right and Maxi Araujo on the left, while Shakhtar posed a danger when they moved the ball quickly towards their forwards.

Kaua Elias missed the clearest chance of the first half when he sent a close-range effort over the crossbar after being found inside the area. The score remained 0–0 at half-time.

Sporting went close shortly after the restart when Doumbia shot wide after being set up by Luis Suarez. The midfielder made amends in the 59th minute, reacting fastest after Shakhtar failed to clear the ball inside their penalty area.

Fotis Ioannidis and Silas Andersen helped create the move through the centre before the loose ball fell to Doumbia, who beat Dmytro Riznyk to score the only goal of the game.

Sporting had chances to secure the points. Suarez headed wide in the 62nd minute and missed the target again seven minutes later, while Riznyk saved an effort from Eduardo Quaresma. Shakhtar remained in the contest, with Marlon Gomes shooting wide from inside the area in the 65th minute and Kaua Elias failing to convert another opportunity.

Alisson Santana threatened late on. Rui Silva saved one attempt before the Brazilian struck the post in the 82nd minute. The goalkeeper was called upon again in added time to keep out a header from Newertton.

Goncalo Inacio also helped protect the lead, including one important recovery behind Rui Silva during a dangerous attack. Shakhtar finished with 14 shots to Sporting’s 11 and won seven corners compared with Sporting’s two, but could not find an equaliser.

Doumbia was the standout performer after scoring the decisive goal despite missing an earlier chance. Rui Silva and Inacio were also key to preserving the clean sheet. The assessment is an editorial selection by SNA and not an official award.

Shakhtar remain on four points. Sporting leave London with three points and a clean sheet, although their failure to convert further chances left the outcome in doubt until the final whistle.
