Spain maintained their perfect record in the UEFA Nations League with a 2-1 comeback victory over Croatia, securing their place in the quarter-finals.
The win was Spain’s fourth in a row in the group stage and moved them to 12 points at the top of the table. Croatia remain third on three points after their latest defeat.
Croatia took the lead in the 18th minute through Ivan Perisic. The experienced forward reacted quickest after Unai Simon had parried the ball, turning the rebound into the net.
The goal came during a difficult opening period for Spain, who struggled to establish their rhythm as Croatia committed fully to their attacking moves.
Spain responded after the interval and eventually levelled in the 61st minute. Mikel Merino finished off one of a series of attacks to bring Luis de la Fuente’s side back into the match.
The Arsenal forward’s goal reflected Spain’s growing control of possession and their increasing threat in the final third. Croatia were forced to defend for long periods as the home side pressed for a second.
Croatia’s task became more difficult in the 78th minute when Perisic was shown a second yellow card for a clear foul on Marc Cucurella. The dismissal left Croatia with 10 players for the closing stages.
Spain took advantage of the numerical advantage and continued to push forward in search of the winning goal. Their pressure was rewarded in the 89th minute when Merino scored again to complete the turnaround.
The late strike was Merino’s second of the match and secured Spain’s fourth consecutive victory in the competition. Croatia, meanwhile, were left with three points from their group campaign so far.
