Somalia gov’t condemns US decision to deny entry to World Cup referee Omar Artan

Somalia has expressed “deep regret” over the United States’ decision to deny entry to international football referee Omar Abdulkadir Artan, describing him as one of the country’s most accomplished sporting figures and pledging to seek further clarification on the matter.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, Somalia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation said it was disappointed by the decision to refuse entry to Artan, who was travelling to the United States ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The ministry hailed Artan as the CAF Referee of the Year for 2025 and said he had become a source of national pride through his achievements on the international stage.

“Mr. Artan is Somalia’s most accomplished sporting figure and a source of immense national pride,” the statement said.

The Somali government revealed that it had engaged in diplomatic efforts with the relevant authorities in support of Artan’s travel but said those efforts ultimately failed to secure a positive outcome.

Officials did not provide further details about the discussions but said the government remained committed to pursuing answers regarding the circumstances surrounding the decision.

The statement comes after U.S. authorities denied Artan entry despite his reportedly holding a valid visa. American officials have since said the decision was linked to concerns about alleged associations with suspected members of terrorist organisations, a claim that has not been publicly substantiated.

Somalia’s government did not directly address those allegations in its statement. Instead, it focused on praising Artan’s career and highlighting his role as an inspiration to young people across the country.

“His success continues to inspire Somali youth and demonstrates that talent, commitment and perseverance can lead to international excellence,” the ministry said.

The government confirmed that Artan had safely returned home and would continue carrying out his national and international refereeing responsibilities.

It also thanked countries, institutions, sporting bodies and individuals who had expressed solidarity following the incident.

Somalia said it would continue engaging with international partners to seek clarification and to protect the rights and dignity of its citizens abroad.

Ending on a note of support, the ministry welcomed Artan back to the country, saying the Somali people stood proudly behind him and celebrated his achievements.
