Tanzania’s Simba SC have qualified for the 2026/27 TotalEnergies CAF Champions League group stage after completing a 9-1 aggregate victory over Equatorial Guinea’s 15 de Agosto.
Simba won the second-leg encounter 3-0 in Dar es Salaam on Sunday, with Anicet Oura, Elie Mpanzu and Matlala Makgalwa scoring in the second half to confirm their progression to the next phase.
The Tanzanian side had already established a commanding advantage in the first leg, winning 6-1 away from home on Wednesday. Their latest performance completed a convincing two-match triumph and underlined their attacking strength ahead of the group stage, which is scheduled to begin in November.
Simba will join domestic rivals Young Africans among the 16 clubs competing in the group stage, giving Tanzania two representatives in Africa’s leading club competition.
The result also ends 15 de Agosto’s continental campaign after the Equatorial Guinea side conceded nine goals across the two legs.
Simba break through after goalless first half
Despite carrying a five-goal advantage into the return match, Simba had to wait until the second half to make their dominance count on the scoreboard.
The opening 45 minutes ended without a goal, with 15 de Agosto managing to keep their hosts at bay despite the difficult task of overturning the first-leg deficit.
Simba eventually broke the deadlock in the 57th minute when Oura found the net. The goal extended the Tanzanian club’s aggregate lead and left their opponents facing an increasingly difficult challenge.
Mpanzu added a second in the 69th minute as Simba continued to control the contest. Nine minutes later, Makgalwa scored the third goal to complete the 3-0 victory.
The three second-half strikes ensured there was no late uncertainty over qualification, with Simba comfortably advancing after another productive attacking display.
Their ability to turn a goalless first half into a decisive victory also demonstrated the depth of their threat over the course of the tie.
Nine goals underline Simba’s attacking strength
The return-leg performance followed an equally impressive display in Equatorial Guinea, where Simba recorded a 6-1 win in the opening encounter.
Ibrahim Doumbia scored twice in that match, while Nathaniel Chilambo, Mpanzu, Makgalwa and Oura also found the net.
The six-goal performance gave Simba a substantial cushion before the return fixture in Tanzania. Their three additional goals on Sunday brought their total across the two matches to nine.
Oura, Mpanzu and Makgalwa all scored in the second leg after having also contributed to the first-leg victory, highlighting the attacking contributions of several players during the qualification campaign.
The aggregate scoreline provides a strong platform for Simba as they prepare for the next stage of the tournament. Their performances against 15 de Agosto have established them as a side capable of producing goals consistently, although the group stage will present a new challenge against Africa’s leading clubs.
Tanzania secure two places in the group stage
Simba’s qualification means Tanzania will have two clubs in the Champions League group stage, alongside Young Africans.
The presence of both teams among the continent’s final 16 represents an important opportunity for Tanzanian football to maintain a strong presence in the competition.
For Simba, attention will now shift towards the group stage, which is due to start in November. Their immediate objective of progressing through the second preliminary round has been achieved emphatically, leaving them to prepare for the challenges ahead.
Their 9-1 aggregate success offers encouragement as they pursue continental honours, following a tie in which they demonstrated both attacking efficiency and the ability to manage a substantial advantage.
For 15 de Agosto, the result brings a disappointing end to their campaign. After conceding six times on home soil in the first leg, they were unable to produce the response required in Dar es Salaam and conceded three more goals.
Simba, by contrast, can look ahead to the group stage with confidence after completing one of the most convincing qualification victories of their campaign.
