Remo Stars F.C. have suffered a dramatic relegation from the Nigeria Premier Football League following the conclusion of the 2025/26 season, just one year after making history as league champions.
The Sky Blue Stars entered the final day needing victory away to Bendel Insurance F.C. to secure survival, but could only manage a 1-1 draw in a tense behind-closed-doors encounter in Benin.
Veteran striker Victor Mbaoma gave Remo Stars hope after scoring his 14th league goal of the season on the stroke of halftime.
However, heartbreak arrived deep into stoppage time when Chijioke Akuneto rescued a late equaliser for Bendel Insurance, a goal that ultimately proved devastating for the visitors.
Despite beginning the day just above the relegation zone, results elsewhere pushed Remo Stars into serious danger.
Victories for Niger Tornadoes F.C. and Warri Wolves F.C. increased the pressure, while Kwara United F.C. survived despite suffering a heavy 4-0 defeat to already relegated Bayelsa United F.C. thanks to superior goal difference.
Attention then shifted to the delayed clash between Kun Khalifat F.C. and already relegated Wikki Tourists F.C., which started late because of heavy rain.
Kun Khalifat only needed a point to guarantee safety and condemn Remo Stars to relegation, but they went one better by securing a dramatic victory.
Jonathan Mairiga opened the scoring before Uchechukwu Onuoha equalised for the home side. Lekan Gabriel restored Kun Khalifat’s advantage before Onuoha completed his brace late in the match.
The result officially confirmed Remo Stars’ relegation to the Nigeria National League, marking their first drop from the top flight since returning in 2021.
Remo Stars now join El-Kanemi Warriors F.C., Bayelsa United and Wikki Tourists among the four clubs relegated from the NPFL this season.
