Chelsea star Romeo Lavia ends Ghanaian heritage speculation

Chelsea midfielder Romeo Lavia has firmly rejected suggestions that he has Ghanaian ancestry, clarifying that his family roots are in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

The 22-year-old Belgian international addressed the speculation in an interview with UK-based Ghanaian journalist Rahman Osman following Chelsea’s 2-0 victory over Manchester United.

Lavia said he had repeatedly encountered claims on social media suggesting that he had Ghanaian heritage but insisted that the reports were inaccurate.

“I’ve seen that a lot on social media and it’s never true. I don’t have any Ghanaian heritage, I am from Congo,” he stated.

His comments are expected to bring an end to recurring discussions among Ghanaian football supporters about his possible ancestral connection to the West African country.

The midfielder’s clarification also settles questions surrounding whether he could have Ghanaian eligibility through his family background, as he has made it clear that his parents are Congolese.

Lavia addresses persistent speculation

The Chelsea midfielder’s ancestry had become a subject of discussion among football fans, particularly on social media, where his possible links to Ghana had attracted attention.

Ghanaian supporters have regularly followed the backgrounds of players with potential connections to the country, especially those who could be eligible to represent the Black Stars at international level.

However, Lavia has now directly addressed the rumours, making it clear that there is no Ghanaian connection to his family heritage.

His statement was unequivocal, with the player identifying himself as being of Congolese descent rather than Ghanaian origin.

The clarification is particularly significant given the interest surrounding players who have multiple national or ancestral connections and could potentially represent different countries in international football.

In Lavia’s case, however, his comments have ruled out the Ghanaian heritage that had been attributed to him in online discussions.

From Brussels to European football

Lavia was born on 6 January 2004 in Brussels, Belgium, to Congolese parents.

He began his football education at Belgian club Anderlecht, where he developed his abilities before attracting the attention of English Premier League champions Manchester City.

The midfielder joined Manchester City in 2020, marking an important step in his development and providing him with an opportunity to continue his progress in English football.

He subsequently moved to Southampton in 2022, where his performances helped establish him as one of the promising young midfielders attracting interest from leading European clubs.

His displays at Southampton generated significant attention, with several top sides monitoring his development.

Chelsea eventually won the race for his signature in August 2023, completing a deal reportedly worth £58 million.

The transfer represented a major investment in the young midfielder, who was regarded as a promising addition to the club’s midfield options.

Belgian international despite Congolese roots

Although Lavia was born in Belgium and has Congolese family origins, his international football career has been with the Belgian national team.

He has represented Belgium at various youth levels and has also received recognition at senior international level.

His international background has further contributed to discussions about his identity and potential eligibility, particularly among supporters interested in the ancestry of players competing in Europe’s leading leagues.

However, his latest remarks have provided a direct response to the speculation linking him to Ghana.

By confirming that both his family background and heritage are Congolese, Lavia has made his position clear.

The midfielder’s statement is likely to end the recurring debate among Ghanaian fans about whether he has ancestral ties to the country.

For now, the Chelsea player has left little room for further speculation, insisting that his heritage is Congolese rather than Ghanaian.
