Rassie Erasmus is due to name his Springboks end-of-year touring squad this week, with teenage Sharks back Zekhethelo Siyaya emerging as a possible selection.
The 19-year-old has made rapid progress since coming through the Sharks’ youth system after attending Westville Boys’ High School. A versatile back, Siyaya is comfortable at fullback or on the wing and has adapted quickly to senior rugby.
His performances in the United Rugby Championship have brought him increasing attention from supporters and national coaches. Siyaya’s footwork, confidence under the high ball and composure have prompted calls for Erasmus to consider him for the Springboks sooner rather than later.
The potential opening comes with experienced wings Cheslin Kolbe and Makazole Mapimpi expected to miss the November Tests because of injury. That could create an opportunity for Siyaya to be included in the touring party, potentially as a travelling squad member whose primary role would be to gain international experience.
Siyaya was called into a Springbok alignment camp earlier this season, an indication that he is already being monitored by the national set-up. He subsequently made a promising, although short, appearance for South Africa ‘A’ against Zimbabwe.
His form has continued during the current Sharks campaign, including notable displays in European competition. Those performances have suggested that his attacking ability and overall skill set can withstand the physical demands associated with northern hemisphere rugby.
The Springboks are looking to strengthen their backline depth and introduce emerging players to European Test conditions during the build-up to the next World Cup cycle. Siyaya’s dynamic approach in attack and swift development could therefore place him among the candidates for an international call-up.
Whether Erasmus believes the teenager is ready to contribute immediately, or views the tour primarily as an opportunity for him to learn within the squad, will become clearer when the touring group is announced.
