Former Africa Cup of Nations winner Bouna Sarr says he remains open to returning to the Senegal national team as Patrick Vieira prepares to officially take charge of the Lions of Teranga.
The 34-year-old full-back, who is now captain of FC Metz, has admitted that representing Senegal again remains one of his ambitions, although he says he is not putting pressure on himself to secure a recall.
“I think about it, but it’s not something I’m stressing about.”
Sarr believes he still possesses the physical qualities required to contribute at international level and has made it clear that he would welcome another opportunity with the national team.
“I still have the legs to help the national team.”
The defender’s last appearance for Senegal came on 29 March 2022, when he featured against Egypt.
He has not been selected since then, meaning his potential return would mark a comeback after more than four years away from the international set-up.
Sarr’s prospects could be helped by his recent return to form at club level.
After several injury problems, the full-back returned to Metz in February and has gradually been working his way back towards his best condition.
His performances at the beginning of the current season could give him an opportunity to attract the attention of the national team once again.
Sarr has reiterated that his international ambitions remain intact, while stressing that his immediate priority is his club football.
“I still have what it takes to help the national team,” Bouna Sarr said, not ruling out a return to the national team.
The comments come as Vieira prepares to begin his work with Senegal, potentially creating a new opportunity for players who have been outside the national team picture.
For Sarr, a return would represent a continuation of a relationship with the national team that has been on hold since 2022.
He was part of the Senegal side that won the Africa Cup of Nations in February 2022, when the Lions of Teranga claimed the continental title.
That success remains the most significant achievement of his international career, but he has not been involved with the national team since the following month.
Sarr’s time away from international football has also coincided with a difficult period at club level, with several injuries affecting his progress.
Since returning to Metz in February, however, he has been rebuilding his fitness and form.
Now wearing the captain’s armband for the French club, the experienced defender is once again playing regularly enough to consider what could come next.
At 34, Sarr would bring considerable experience if he were to receive another opportunity with Senegal, having already been part of a squad that lifted the continent’s biggest international trophy.
For now, though, he is leaving the decision in the hands of events rather than actively pursuing a recall.
