Senegal’s Assane Diao shines as Como climb to Serie A summit

Senegal international Assane Diao scored twice as Como came from behind to beat Genoa 4-1 and move provisionally to the top of Serie A.

Diao’s performance continued an impressive run of form for the 20-year-old, who had already played a decisive role for Como in their previous match against Napoli.

The forward was again central to the Lombardy club’s success on Friday, scoring either side of Nico Paz’s goal to help Como secure a convincing victory away from home.

Genoa took an early lead when they scored in the 19th minute, but Como quickly recovered from the setback.

Martin Baturina brought the visitors level before Diao completed the turnaround in the 30th minute, giving Como the advantage for the first time in the match.

Nico Paz added a third before the interval, leaving Genoa with a significant deficit to overcome in the second half.

Diao then put the result beyond doubt in the 78th minute when he scored his second goal of the evening.

The goal was set up by Moise Kean, who had joined Como from Fiorentina on Tuesday. The Italy international was making his first appearance for his new club and marked his debut with an assist for Diao.

The victory takes Como to seven points and places them at the top of the Serie A table, although their position is provisional with other teams still to play.

Having already impressed against Napoli, Diao has now followed that display with another decisive contribution, suggesting he is finding an increasingly influential role in Como’s attack.

The Senegal international’s brace was ultimately the difference between the two sides as Como turned an early setback into a commanding victory.

With seven points from their opening matches, the Lombardy club can now enjoy a spell at the top of the Italian league while waiting for the rest of the weekend’s fixtures.
