The under-20 women’s football team of Senegal have won the WAFU Women’s U-20 Championship for a third consecutive time after defeating hosts Guinea-Bissau 3-0 in the final on Sunday.
The victory confirmed Senegal’s continued dominance in the regional competition, with the Lionesses completing another unbeaten campaign and finishing the tournament in emphatic fashion.
Senegal entered the final as favourites after a series of commanding performances throughout the championship. Their latest triumph means they have now secured three straight WAFU Women’s U-20 titles, underlining the country’s growing strength in women’s football across West Africa.
The hosts Guinea-Bissau were unable to stop the Senegalese side, who controlled the contest and sealed a comfortable win to lift the trophy once again.
Following the final, Senegal’s Ministry of Youth and Sports praised the team’s achievement in a message shared on social media.
“The Minister also congratulates the ‘Lionesses of Senegal’ U-20, after their win over Guinea-Bissau in the final of the West African Women’s Football Championship on their home turf,” the statement read.
It added: “This third consecutive title cements Senegal’s dominance over this regional competition.”
Senegal had shown their intentions from the beginning of the tournament. The Lionesses opened their campaign with a 2-0 victory over Gambia before recording another 2-0 win against Liberia.
Their most convincing display came in the penultimate round, where they overwhelmed Mali with a 4-0 victory to book their place in the final.
Across the competition, Senegal combined a solid defence with an effective attack, conceding no goals while consistently finding the net against their opponents.
Forward Sokhna Nguén Bène played a major role in the successful campaign and ended the tournament as the leading scorer with five goals. Her performances proved crucial as Senegal powered through the championship unbeaten.
The latest title is another milestone for the Senegalese women’s programme, which has continued to make progress at youth level in recent years. Winning three successive regional championships is likely to strengthen confidence in the development of young female footballers in the country.
For Guinea-Bissau, reaching the final on home soil represented a notable achievement despite the defeat. However, Senegal’s experience and attacking quality proved decisive in the championship match.
The WAFU Women’s U-20 Championship has increasingly become an important competition for emerging talent in West African football, giving young players the opportunity to gain international experience and showcase their abilities on a regional stage.
Senegal’s latest success further highlights their status as one of the leading sides in the competition. With another title secured and several standout performances during the tournament, the Lionesses have once again demonstrated why they remain the team to beat in West African women’s youth football.
