Senegal storm into next round with perfect start at Schools Football Championship

Senegal have made an emphatic start to their African School Cup campaign, winning both of their opening Group B matches to secure early qualification for the next stage of the tournament.

The Young Lions, who entered the competition as reigning runners-up, delivered a composed and clinical performance across two matches played on the same day, underlining their credentials as serious contenders.

Their campaign began with a narrow but controlled 1-0 victory over Benin in the morning fixture.

Senegal took the lead as early as the fifth minute when Cheikh Omar Sy capitalised on a defensive lapse to score what proved to be the decisive goal.

Benin responded with intensity, attempting to disrupt Senegal’s rhythm through aggressive pressing.

However, Senegal’s defensive organisation held firm, with goalkeeper Preira producing a series of key saves to preserve the advantage. Tactical adjustments late in the match ensured the West Africans secured all three points in their opening game.

Just hours later, Senegal returned to the pitch for a second Group B clash against Tanzania, a side that had previously troubled them in an earlier edition of the competition. This time, however, the outcome told a different story.

Determined to assert control early, Senegal pressed high from the outset, forcing errors in the Tanzanian defence.

Their approach paid off within minutes when a handball in the penalty area presented an opportunity. Captain Bara Gueye stepped up and converted the spot-kick to give his side an early lead.

Although Tanzania managed to draw level just before the break, Senegal responded strongly in the second half.

Kader, influential on the wing, created the decisive moment by delivering a precise pass for Cheikh Omar Sy, who scored his second goal of the tournament to restore his team’s lead.

Coach Ousmane Diop then made key substitutions to maintain control of the match.

The changes proved effective, with attacking midfielder Pierre making an immediate impact by scoring with a powerful strike into the top corner shortly after coming on.

Tanzania reduced the deficit late on with a penalty, but Senegal held on to secure a 3-2 victory — completing a perfect day with two wins from two matches.

The results mean Senegal finish top of Group B, ahead of their rivals, and advance confidently to the next round.

Elsewhere in the group, Tanzania drew 1-1 with Zambia, while in Group A, Morocco recorded a dominant 6-1 win over DR Congo and Zimbabwe drew 1-1 with Uganda.

For Senegal, the focus now shifts to maintaining momentum as the tournament progresses.

Their strong start, marked by disciplined defending, effective attacking play, and impactful substitutions, sends a clear message to the rest of the field.

With qualification already secured, the Young Lions have not only met expectations but have also reinforced their reputation as one of the teams to watch in the competition.
