Senegal head coach Pape Thiaw is set to learn his future as the Senegalese Football Federation (FSF) prepares to hold an emergency executive committee meeting in Dakar on Saturday.
The meeting is expected to shape the future of the Teranga Lions following their disappointing 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign, which ended with a dramatic 3-2 Round of 32 defeat to Belgium.
Senegal looked destined for the last 16 after taking control of the contest but suffered a late collapse, conceding twice after the 85th minute as Belgium completed a stunning comeback.
Thiaw’s future under review
Despite the disappointing exit, Thiaw has maintained that he signed a contract extension with the national team during the World Cup.
However, uncertainty remains over whether the federation’s leadership is fully committed to continuing with the former Senegal international.
According to French newspaper L’Équipe, there are growing doubts within Senegalese football over Thiaw’s long-term future, with some officials reportedly questioning whether he is the right coach to lead the national team into its next cycle.
The report adds that discussions have already begun over potential alternatives should the federation decide to make a managerial change.
Vieira among candidates
Former France international Patrick Vieira has reportedly emerged as one of the names under consideration.
The Dakar-born coach is said to have supporters within Senegal’s football structures, with his experience at the highest levels of European football viewed as a major asset.
Vieira has been without a coaching role since leaving Serie A side Genoa in November 2025. His managerial résumé also includes spells at Crystal Palace and Nice, alongside previous experience with New York City FC.
His international profile, coaching pedigree and Senegalese roots have reportedly made him an attractive option should the federation opt for a change.
Crucial decision ahead
The FSF executive committee meeting is expected to determine whether Thiaw will remain in charge or whether Senegal will begin a new era under different leadership.
With the Teranga Lions aiming to remain among Africa’s leading football nations ahead of the next Africa Cup of Nations and World Cup qualifying campaigns, Saturday’s discussions could prove pivotal in shaping the team’s future direction.
