Senegal international Mikayil Faye will spend the 2026/27 season in Germany after joining 2. Bundesliga side FC Nuremberg on loan from French club Stade Rennais.
The 22-year-old defender completed a season-long move with an option to buy, giving him another opportunity to secure regular first-team football after limited playing time in France and Italy over the past two seasons.
For one of Senegal’s brightest young defenders, the move represents another important step in his development as he seeks to fulfil the promise that has followed him since leaving Africa for European football.
Faye struggled for consistent opportunities after joining Rennes in the summer of 2024 and now heads to Germany hoping to rebuild momentum under former Germany international and World Cup-winning striker Miroslav Klose, who is in charge of FC Nuremberg.
The Bundesliga 2 club believes the defender will strengthen its backline ahead of the new campaign, while Faye will be aiming to rediscover the form that once made him one of the most highly rated young defenders in European football.
Despite his age, Faye has already experienced football in several European countries. After leaving his native Senegal, the 1.83m defender moved to Croatia with NK Kustošija before earning a transfer to FC Barcelona’s youth setup.
His performances for Barça Atlètic quickly attracted attention, and he made 35 appearances for the Spanish club’s reserve side before securing a move to Stade Rennais in 2024.
The switch to France was expected to accelerate his development, but opportunities proved limited. He featured in 12 Ligue 1 matches before spending last season on loan at Italian club US Cremonese, where he made eight Serie A appearances.
Now, another move offers the Senegal international the chance to establish himself in one of Europe’s competitive leagues while continuing his development in Germany.
Faye has also continued to make progress with the Senegal national team. He made his senior debut on 22 March 2024 and marked the occasion by scoring, immediately announcing himself on the international stage.
His performances for club and country have ensured he remains one of Senegal’s most closely watched young defenders, with regular playing time viewed as a key factor in his long-term development.
The move to FC Nuremberg is therefore expected to benefit both player and club.
While the German side gain a defender with experience in France, Spain and Italy, Faye receives another opportunity to showcase the qualities that first earned him a move to Barcelona before later attracting Rennes.
Speaking after the transfer was confirmed, the Senegalese defender expressed his gratitude for the confidence shown in him.
“I thank the FCN management for seeing so much potential in me. I want to repay that faith on the pitch and I am very happy to discover the team and start this new season in the 2. Bundesliga,” said Mikayil Faye.
His arrival also strengthens Miroslav Klose’s defensive options ahead of the new season as FC Nuremberg look to compete strongly in Germany’s second tier.
