Former England captain Wayne Rooney has criticised the decision to strip Senegal of their 2025 Africa Cup of Nations title, describing the outcome as “crazy” following a controversial ruling by the Confederation of African Football (CAF).
Senegal were initially crowned champions after defeating Morocco 1-0 in the final, with Pape Gueye scoring the decisive goal in extra time.
However, CAF’s Appeals Board later overturned the result and awarded Morocco a 3-0 victory by default, citing a breach of tournament regulations.
The decision stemmed from a 17-minute walk-off by Senegalese players during the match after a stoppage-time penalty was awarded to Morocco.
Although the players returned to the pitch and completed the game, CAF ruled that the temporary withdrawal constituted a forfeiture under its regulations.
Reacting to the development, Rooney questioned both the fairness and credibility of the decision.
“It’s crazy. If I was a Morocco player, I wouldn’t accept it.”
“Senegal beat them fair and square.”
The ruling has triggered strong reactions across the football world, with Senegal’s football authorities moving swiftly to challenge the outcome.
The Senegalese Football Federation has described the decision as “unfair, unprecedented and unacceptable,” and confirmed that it will take the case to the Court of Arbitration for Sport.
The federation has been given 10 days to file its appeal, setting the stage for a high-profile legal battle that could reshape the outcome of the tournament.
CAF has defended its decision, stating that it was made in accordance with competition rules relating to forfeiture.
According to the governing body, a team that leaves the pitch without authorisation may be deemed to have forfeited the match, regardless of whether play later resumes.
CAF president Patrice Motsepe has responded to criticism by reiterating the organisation’s commitment to fairness and equal treatment among member associations.
He also confirmed that CAF would respect and abide by the final ruling of CAS once the appeal process is concluded.
Meanwhile, the Royal Moroccan Football Federation has welcomed the ruling, expressing satisfaction with the application of tournament regulations.
