Kaizer Chiefs extended their unbeaten run in the Betway Premiership but were unable to secure victory as they played out a goalless draw against Polokwane City at the old Peter Mokaba Stadium on Saturday evening.
In a match that produced several promising moments but no goals, both sides demonstrated attacking intent, with the final scoreline reflecting the balance of play across the 90 minutes. While Chiefs showed flashes of quality, Polokwane City proved equally capable of creating opportunities, resulting in a fair outcome.
Chiefs began brightly, displaying the confidence of a side enjoying a sustained run of positive results. Their movement and passing were sharp early on, suggesting they might take control of the match. That intent was evident in the eighth minute when a slick attacking move nearly produced the opener. Glody Lilepo’s clever backheel found Flavio Da Silva, whose dummy allowed the ball to run through to Thabiso Monyane. With a clear sight of goal, Monyane was brought down by Bonginkosi Dlamini, who received a yellow card for the challenge.
The resulting free kick saw Lilepo test goalkeeper Lindokuhle Mathebula, who reacted quickly to keep the score level. At that stage, Chiefs appeared poised to dominate proceedings.
However, the hosts gradually worked their way back into the contest. Polokwane City adopted a more direct approach, pushing the ball forward quickly and delivering early crosses into the penalty area. This tactic yielded a couple of half-chances, though neither troubled the scoreboard. In the 27th minute, Mokibelo Ramabu came closest for the home side, forcing Brandon Petersen into a sharp save that led to a corner.
As the first half progressed, both teams continued to search for a breakthrough. Wandile Duba came close shortly after the half-hour mark, while Chiefs were forced into a change when Aden McCarthy left the field injured and was replaced by Inacio Miguel. Further attempts from Mduduzi Shabalala and Monyane from distance failed to find the target, and the teams went into the interval deadlocked.
The second half followed a similar pattern, with Polokwane City initially applying pressure before Chiefs reasserted themselves. Despite creating openings, Chiefs were unable to convert their chances. In the 59th minute, Duba fired wide after being set up by Da Silva following strong hold-up play. Soon after, Lilepo was unable to direct his effort inside the near post after Da Silva’s shot had been blocked.
Although both sides continued to push forward, neither could find the decisive moment needed to claim all three points. The result leaves Chiefs still unbeaten, but unable to extend their winning streak, while Polokwane City can take encouragement from a competitive display against in-form opposition.
