African players made a strong impression on the opening matchday of the 2026-27 Champions League, with six finding the net and three others providing assists as clubs across Europe began their campaigns.
Guinea international Serhou Guirassy was the standout performer, scoring twice for Borussia Dortmund in their 3-2 victory over Villarreal.
The African contingent also included goals from Mozambique’s Geny Catamo, Senegal’s Nicolas Jackson and Assane Diao, Senegalese forward Abdallah Sima and Gambia international Suleiman Camara.
Cameroon forward Bryan Mbeumo, Algeria international Rayan Aït-Nouri and Morocco’s Brahim Díaz also registered assists.
Guirassy was the headline performer after playing a decisive role in Dortmund’s home victory against Villarreal.
With the match still level in the final quarter of an hour, the Guinean striker broke the deadlock in the 80th minute. He added a second five minutes later from the penalty spot to put Dortmund two goals ahead.
Villarreal reduced the deficit in stoppage time through an own goal involving Guirassy, but Dortmund held on to claim the win.
Guirassy’s two goals earned him the UEFA man of the match award and underlined his influence on the German side’s opening-night success.
Mozambique’s Geny Catamo was another African player to make a significant contribution.
Sporting CP fell behind against Galatasaray but responded strongly, with Catamo scoring the equaliser to revive the Portuguese side’s hopes.
Sporting went on to take control of the game and complete a 3-1 victory, with Catamo’s goal proving an important moment in the turnaround.
For Senegal’s Nicolas Jackson, the opening round also marked a memorable start to his Champions League campaign with Aston Villa.
Making his first Champions League appearance for the English club, Jackson scored against Club Brugge.
The Senegalese forward netted Villa’s third goal before half-time, giving the English side a two-goal advantage at the break. Club Brugge attempted to fight back, but Villa held on for a 3-2 victory.
Another Senegalese forward, Assane Diao, was part of a historic night for Como as the Italian club made its first appearance in the Champions League.
Diao scored Como’s third goal against RB Leipzig as the Lombardy club produced an emphatic 4-1 victory.
His goal added to the significance of the occasion for Como and gave the Senegalese forward a direct contribution to the club’s historic European result.
Abdallah Sima was also instrumental in a comeback victory, scoring for RC Lens against Slavia Prague.
Lens had fallen behind before the Senegalese striker restored parity. The match subsequently developed into a dramatic contest, with the French side eventually securing a 3-2 win.
For Gambia international Suleiman Camara, the outcome was less positive despite his personal contribution.
Playing for Slovan Bratislava against Paris Saint-Germain, Camara scored his side’s only goal in a heavy 6-1 defeat.
With PSG already in control, the Gambian produced an individual effort that ended with a shot into the top corner.
African players also made their mark without scoring.
Mbeumo started for Manchester United against Sabah and supplied the assist for Benjamin Šeško to score the English club’s third goal in a 4-0 victory.
Algerian international Rayan Aït-Nouri made an immediate impact after coming on as a substitute for Manchester City against FC Porto, providing an assist for Erling Haaland.
Morocco’s Brahim Díaz completed the list of African players who directly contributed to goals.
Their performances gave African representation a strong start to the new Champions League campaign.
