Paul Put explains key absences as Uganda name AFCON squad

Uganda head coach Paul Put has named a 28-player squad for the upcoming 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers against Tunisia and Libya, with the Cranes also set to face Democratic Republic of Congo in two international friendly matches.

Uganda will travel to face Tunisia on 24 September before hosting Libya on 29 September in their AFCON 2027 qualifying campaign.

The Cranes will then take on DR Congo twice, on 2 and 5 October, as part of their fixtures during the September-October international window.

Put has selected a squad featuring players based across Africa, Europe and the United States as Uganda prepare for four matches during the international period.

The coach has also explained the absence of several familiar names from the squad.

Jordan Obita and Elio Capradossi will miss the window because of injuries, with Put wishing both players a speedy recovery.

Captain Khalid Aucho is also absent, along with Salim Jamal, Uche Ikpeazu, John Paul Dembe, Rogers Bobosi Byaruhanga and Jude Ssemugabi.

Put said some of the players left out are currently without clubs or have recently completed transfers and therefore have not had enough playing time.

Others have only recently returned from lengthy injuries and have yet to regain their full match rhythm, with limited minutes in recent matches also affecting their selection.

However, the Uganda coach stressed that the door remains open for those players to return to the national team.

Put said he was confident in the group selected for what will be a demanding run of competitive and friendly fixtures.

The squad includes experienced goalkeeper Denis Onyango of South African club Mamelodi Sundowns, alongside David Lukwago of SC Villa and Hannington Ssebwalunyo of NEC FC.

The defensive options include Toby Sibbick of Burton Albion in England, Rogers Torach of Algeria’s CS Constantine and Aziizi Kayondo of FC Slovan Liberec in the Czech Republic.

Herbert Bockhorn of FC Magdeburg in Germany, Nathan Asiimwe of Salford City in England and Gavin Kizito of Nairobi United in Kenya are also part of the squad.

Uganda’s midfield selection includes Baba Alhassan of Mardin 1996 Spor in Turkey, Noble Okello of Lexington SC in the United States, Kenneth Semakula of Al Ittihad Alexandria Club in Egypt and Allan Oyirwoth of Dunfermline FC in Scotland.

Joseph Seremba of Nairobi United completes the midfield options.

The forward line includes James Bogere of AGF in Denmark, Travis Mutyaba of CS Sfaxien in Tunisia and Denis Omedi of Gor Mahia in Kenya.

Rogers Mato of Hearts FC in Scotland, Hassan Mubiru of Azam FC in Tanzania and Sadam Masereka of Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC in the United States have also been selected.

Steven Mukwala of Al Nasr SC in Libya, Richard Basangwa of NEC FC and Frank Ssebufu of SC Villa complete the named forwards, while AS FAR of Morocco is also listed among the selections.

Uganda’s immediate focus will be the AFCON qualifiers, beginning with the away match against Tunisia before the Cranes return home to face Libya.

The two matches against DR Congo will then provide further competition during the same international window.

The fixtures form part of the FIFA break running for 16 days from 21 September to 6 October 2026.
