Semi Ajayi has helped Hull City secure promotion to the Premier League after a dramatic victory over Middlesbrough in the Championship playoff final.
A late goal from Oli McBurnie settled the tense encounter, with Hull clinching victory in stoppage time to complete their return to England’s top division.
Ajayi played the full match and produced a disciplined defensive display as Hull held firm during a closely fought contest. The Nigerian international contributed both in possession and defensively, recording 18 passes during the game, including six into the final third.
The centre-back also made one tackle, six clearances, one interception and one ball recovery as Hull successfully navigated the pressure of the occasion.
For Ajayi, promotion caps a challenging campaign that was disrupted by injuries. The 32-year-old featured in 22 of Hull’s 48 matches across the season after missing significant periods through hamstring problems.
Those injuries forced him out of 20 games, while international commitments with Nigeria national football team at the Africa Cup of Nations also saw him unavailable for two matches.
Hull’s route to promotion was far from straightforward. The club finished sixth in the Championship table, securing the final playoff position by only two points ahead of Wrexham.
Over the course of the league season, Hull recorded 21 victories, alongside 10 draws and 15 defeats. The side also conceded 66 goals in 46 matches, a defensive statistic that underlined some of the weaknesses within the squad despite their eventual success.
However, those concerns have largely been pushed aside following the club’s successful playoff campaign, with players and supporters celebrating a return to the Premier League.
The promotion victory is expected to mark the beginning of a major rebuilding project at the club as preparations begin for life in the top flight.
Several members of the current squad could depart during the summer transfer window, with club owner Acun Ilıcalı already planning changes ahead of the new season.
The Turkish businessman is expected to oversee an ambitious recruitment drive as Hull attempt to strengthen their squad for the challenges of Premier League football.
The club’s immediate priority will be ensuring survival after returning to the top division, but there is also a longer-term aim of establishing stability at the highest level of English football.
For Ajayi, the achievement represents a significant moment after an injury-hit season, with the defender playing a key role in the decisive playoff final as Hull secured promotion in dramatic fashion.
