Schlotterbeck steps up individual training but Dortmund remain cautious over return

Nico Schlotterbeck has resumed individual training as he continues his recovery, although Borussia Dortmund have yet to establish the full extent of his injury or set a date for his return, according to Sky Sports.

The defender could be back in action as early as Friday if his own assessment of his fitness proves accurate. Dortmund, however, are taking a measured approach because of Schlotterbeck’s injury history and do not want to risk bringing him back too soon.

The club will make a final decision after a series of upcoming load tests. Those assessments are intended to determine whether he can safely increase his involvement without raising the likelihood of a recurrence.

Dortmund head coach Niko Kovac confirmed that Schlotterbeck is currently working alone and could join the rest of the squad shortly.

“Schlotti has been training individually here. The plan is for him to join team training tomorrow. Then we’ll see if he can play,” Kovac said.

A return to team training will provide the next significant indication of Schlotterbeck’s readiness. If he completes the session without discomfort, the centre-back is expected to become an option for the matchday squad again soon.

Schlotterbeck’s availability would be important to Dortmund. He is regarded as one of their key defensive players, contributing both to the team’s build-up play and to its organisation at the back.

Despite his progress, Dortmund will continue to assess him carefully before approving his return.
