Senegal defender Bouna Sarr says he is ready to return to international football and is aiming to be included in the country’s squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup after more than two years away from the game.
The 34-year-old has recently resumed competitive action with FC Metz following a lengthy spell on the sidelines caused by injury. His return marks a significant step in a recovery process that kept him out of action for nearly two and a half years.
Sarr has not represented Senegal national football team since playing a role in their triumph at the 2022 Africa Cup of Nations, but he now believes he can still contribute at the highest level.
Speaking to L’Observateur, the former Bayern Munich and Marseille full-back reflected on the difficulties of his comeback.
“After almost two and a half years without playing, coming back to play in Ligue 1 was not easy. I fought for it,” he confided.
Despite the extended absence, Sarr says he has maintained the physical condition and mindset required for top-level football. He believes his experience could be an asset for a Senegal side preparing for another appearance on the global stage.
“I feel I am eligible for selection and capable of bringing my qualities to the group,” he says.
His comments highlight a determination to resume his international career after a period that threatened to bring it to a premature end. Having been part of the squad that secured Senegal’s first AFCON title, Sarr is now targeting a place at the World Cup as the next milestone in his return.
His situation has drawn comparisons with Sofiane Boufal, who also fought back from injury to re-establish himself at international level.
The decision on Sarr’s potential return will ultimately rest with Senegal head coach Pape Thiaw, who is expected to evaluate his options ahead of the tournament.
